Hi guys
I am intersted in teaching in Noth America and am looking into what placed would suit me.I am after a place with Interesting p/l to meet,an oppurtunity to travel,a scenic place where i could have some oppurtunities to maybe place some tennis or soccer, join a wrestling club or if im very lucky get some dance lessons.
I am planning to stay for a 3 year period and would like to save some money as well as have some experiences.I have a BA,Dip Ed ,and Ma from Melbourne University as well as 5 years experience teaching English and other subjects to high school students.I would like to find something that pays between 3-4 thousand Australian dollars a month.
I would like to know which of the North American East countries could meet my needs.I was also wondering if the INternational/ Private schools in the area pay better then the ESL jobs.I would prefer to teach something other then English and have experience in the Humanities fields mainly. |

Though I rarely wander over to this board, I can tell you that in the US (and most likely Canada too), English teachers are a dime a dozen. They often have hundreds of applications for any openings. If you have a major in science or math, the chances are slightly better. The exception would be in inner city schools, where the danger level keeps most teachers far away.
If you can tolerate extreme cold, there are probably some possibilities in Alaska.
There is no 'international' school system as such. Most private schools are religion related and the pay is very low by the already low pay in education already.
You might look at Mexico, but the pay will be very very low. (BTW... very few people know what an Australian dollar is worth... you might try converting that to US$ or Euros and people might be able to answer.)

Where, exactly, do you want to go? You've asked about Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America. If money is a top concern for you, you can rule out Latin America and North America. Latin American countries don't pay terribly well (I earned $700/month in Peru and between $800 and $1000/month in Chile--in US dollars). In North America--or at least, in the US--most of the work is part-time. The hourly rates may be OK, but with part-time jobs there is no job security, you're not paid for prep time, you get no benefits, etc. And of course you've got to scrape together enough hours to pay the bills!
As far as quality of life, hobbies, etc.--if you get a decent salary and live in a decen-sized city, you can find and afford all of those things.
Good luck,

That's not the point. The problem is the visa. The same as if we want to work in Australia. |
