Gym-wise, if you swim wear a body suit (surf rash top). When you do weights etc wear something that covers your tats. Locker room-wise, hard to hide. If your gyms says no tats, and another customer complains, you'll be out. |
You know, I've always wondered about that. I've NEVER seen a man wear a top (like a rashie) to the pool. Ya figure a person could get away with that without attracting too many stares (being that we already stand out as foreigners & everything)....? |

Jim. When I was in Miyazaki last year, at that big pool Seagaia, I saw one middle aged guy with a rash top. No one gave him funny looks. I glimpsed a bit of his tattoo when his sleeves rode up a bit (both arms so maybe a full upper body tattoo). I reckon it might be a good solution. The other solution for those with tattoos here is not to go anywhere that other guys with tattoos don't. |

I just came back from one of the Izu Islands where I went to an outdoor hotspring (strangely enough, mixed bathing with swimsuits- first time I've seen one like that in Japan).
One of the friends I was with (a Thai woman) has a large tattoo on her back and one on each shoulder- no-one blinked an eyelid, and we went there twice. She made no special effort to cover her tattoos up.
It really seems to depend on where you go, although there are definitely places with signs saying "no tattoos", which most likely aren't going to be make exceptions.
For anyone with small tattoos- I have a very small one on my foot and it causes me no problems, however it is so inconspicuous that even people I have known for a long time have taken a couple of years to notice it |

Tattoo fashion changes alot. When I was a kid the only people with tattoos were builders and bikers and they has tattoos with daggers on saying "Who Dares Wins" and stuff like that Or tattoos on the knockles that said LOVE an HATE. Classy But now more and more ladies have tattoos and very popular ones are Chinese characters. Who here has such tattoos and what do they say? |

I wanted to open this thread because I am worried about the tatoo situation on Japan, i.e. one will be banned from everything and viewed as a yakuza. For example no joining a gym with tatoos? I have a whole bunch, which can all be covered up with longish sleeved t-shirts or long sleeved shirt and pants. My whole upper back is tatooed my shoulders, my entire chest and my right calf and I have a nipple piercing and to top it off 3 earings. I am panicing because I can cover them up but what if I am in the changing room or taking a shower at the gym? I apparently won't be allowed to join at all, huh? I need the scoop from people in the know...cheers all, D |
I know for a fact that Gold's gym does not have any tatoo restriction what so ever! Yesterday at Gold's I wanted to ask this guy if he thought he needed another tatoo! Most of his body was tatooed! Only his left shoulder, left pec and left trap was not tatoed. |
