I am covering classes here in Hikone for a teacher that up and quit with no notice and was wondering if anyone on here knew off hand what the best things to see and do are up around here. I visited Hikone castle this weekend and am thinking of travelling this long weekend.
Better yet, is anyone on this board based in the wonderful city of Hikone? I would definitely be up for grabbing a pint somewhere with just about anyone since I know no one here and only have the internet at school. I am practically crawling up the walls it is so boring. |

I used to live in Hikone a few years back. Not much there. The castle(which you already saw), there is the street that the buddist alters for the home are made.
Next door toi Hikone is Nagahama. Some old shop are there as well as a glass blowing area. They sell glasswares and you can try you hand at making something.
If you are looking for a place to drink. I don't know if it's still there. But SUGIMOTO'S has some local foreigners that like to drink there.

I was teaching in Nagahama tonight and I think I will head back and poke around when I get a chance.
Coming from Arida in Wakayama this place seems like a major attraction. Talk about a boring town.... |

NorthifAmerica, if you want to socialize one night try Beer and Pizza. It is a pub, the bartender speaks English fluently.
The only thing to do in Shiga is go to Kyoto on your days off. |

| Shiga is a gold mine for outdoor pursuits. If you like hiking and camping you'll find plenty to do. If you don't like those things go anyway and you might be pleasantly surprised. Also, in the winter, Shiga has the best skiing in Kansai. |

I actually work just down the road from there. I will check it out tomorrow night.
I am thinking of transferring here rather than heading back to Wakayama. Kyoto is super close and I was in Osaka this weekend. Nagoya and Nara are also pretty close to me. Also, although I didn't bring my snowboard gear and don't know if I can rent I am really interested in snowboarding if I can. For some reason riding the slopes of another continent seems like an opportunity I can't pass up.
Shiga might be a bit sleepy but it has gorgeous nature and is not a bad launchpad for travelling around central Honshu. |
