Did anyone get an email from sperling called "some questions"? Were you able to open it? I just got a blank message.

No, I didn't receive one.
I hope it was authentic.
Sometimes, certain people use quite sophisticated means of sending viruses, worms & other computer-hostile "messages." A common tactic is to "disguise" the point of origin by pretending to be someone else (i.e, using another person's email address).
Do you use a decent AV (anti-virus) program? Maybe it really was completely legit--perhaps others received it too. |

The address was [email protected].
It looked like there was supposed to be an attachment--it was 119k. But the attachment just wasn't there...
I suppose I should run Norton or something to make sure it wasn't a virus.

About a month ago my inbox was continually filled (like 40 messages a day) with emails entitled 'some questions' and other fairly generic sounding titles, with attachments. I'm usually fairly up on these kinds of things, due to a past life in the wilds of IT, but was in transit at the time. Therefore, I can't tell you the exact name of the virus, but it works like Melissa and that Anna Kournikova one a few years back. They grab email addresses from peoples email software (very often Outlook) and send themselves, so that people open them, thinking its from a friend/colleague.
With these types of emails, its always a good idea just to delete them, and then empty your trash. But if you should happen to open one, just DON'T open the attachment and you should be fine.
Have a good day...

Well, email Dave and find out. He replied promptly the one time I contacted him. Sounds sus. though. These forums do have enemies who'd like to see the whole thing come tumbling down. |

It's a Trojan. It infects people's computers and then looks for email addresses in places like the temporary internet files folder. It then chooses one of the addresses to send the message to and another for spoofing the senders address. |

I got another one today from a regular poster here and it was also blank. Any thoughts on how to get rid of this virus? |

I got one from a poster, too. Hmmm... The last time this happened, it was the whatchamacallit virus--sobig? blaster? It just stopped on its own after a few weeks of flooding my inbox.

Did you have an argument with anyone on here lately?
I remember maybe four months ago, a bunch of people who had argued with a particular poster started getting tons of junk mail from porn sites. I don't remember too many particulars, but the latest troll is somebody who's been around for quite a while under different names, so maybe he is connected to both that incident, and the latest one. |

Sitting here with a lovely cough, I'm pondering the way I managed to catch this particular virus. Did someone give it to me on purpose? No, generally, these things are spread by people who don't mean to, and often don't even know they're doing it.
Lots of times its the same with the computer-type viruses. When I kept getting the 'some questions' emails, I would often get 'undeliverable' messages as well, from places that I knew. These messages said that they couldn't send the 'some questions' email that I had generated.
Now, knowing that I had not sent any of these messages, and was accessing the internet solely at internet cafes at the time, made me realise how invasive these viruses can be. Somehow they (the nasty virus machines) got addresses from emails that I had sent previously, and sent the 'some questions' virus to them. This is how they work, because then the sender assumes its from me, and since they know me, the email must be reputable, because I'm such a fine, upstanding internet citizen .
So, to sum up, this is not a plot from someone who wants to kill Dave's ESL Cafe and all its members. Its just the virus running its intended course throughout the internet community. Best thing to do is just delete them from your inbox, and forget about them. If you work from your own machine, make sure your virus software is up to date.
Have a good day,
Lozwich. |

The case refered to by Kurochan involved someone hacking into Daves and getting email addresses, sending abusive messages, spamming, mostly with porn, creating fictitious email addresses using posters real names etc and sending abuse to other posters.
Set up a "Daves only" email box as his system is not secure. |

I'm getting the blank messages, too, and apparently there are blank messages being sent from my email address. Very strange. |

Is anyone else still receiving these emails? I continue to receive 300+K (blank) messages from Dave's address as well as from a few regular posters on this forum. I'm thinking it's probably time to dump that email account. |

I now have a virus on my computer thanks to Dave's Cafe and am getting regular email from sperling. I've spent the better part of 3 days trying to get the virus out, but to no avail. |
