Anyone else smell the rot surrounding this mornings 'bombings'?

Major media gets the phone calls that some bombs are going to go off just after 12 am this morning. How bout that, just in time to make it to the front pages?

Not too bad timing-perfect diversionary tactic and why it fits right in with the emerging calls for the stricter use of force in dealing with social issues.

THe unexploded bomb, in big red letters with the warning: DANGER, BOMB. I seem to recall a similar scenario in an episode with Wile. E Coyote and the Roadrunner.

All of the locations have extensive security systems, with the TRIFE's being ultra sophisticated. Nothing happens in or near there without being recorded by cameras. The bombs exploded from inside the building. And whadaya know, the cameras weren't working yesterday.

THe PGR immediately claimed authority to investigate the case. The PGR is the corrupt federal police force used when convenient to cover up crimes in which the federal government or its cronies are involved.

Who's been reding the CIA's 'How to Create Situations that May require a Coup or at the very Least the Suspension of all Basic Human Rights' for Dummies?

Pathetic ,but unfortunately not surprising.

And this just in from El Universal, some of the groups claiming responsabilty:

Is this list a joke? The Islamic Front of Xonotepec and the Pederasts of Christ? Is that an offshoot of NAMBLA?

I had the same thought when hearing about it. Fishy indeed. Something similar happened in 2001 (I think it was) when the Zapatistas were due to arrive in town to meet newly elected Fox. 5 mini-bombs blown up at various banks, no damage, no warning though.

But, I'd rather wait to her more before passing judgment. There are too many people and groups capable of such a thing, from the right to the left.

Well, it didn't take long to track some info related to the 2001 bank bombs (which were more like firecrackers). Thanks to my bro-in-law.

The 2001 midnight bank bombings were blamed on a group from UNAM...a left-wing group that wanted to make a very real message, though without hurting anyone. To generate a little fear.

Members of the Cerezo family were caught on video planting the bombs. I will post a link to info as soon s I find one. Much more interesting about this case is that human rights lawyer Digna Ochoa was their lawyer. She was found killed in her office, though officially, it was stated that she had committed suicide by first shooting herself in the leg, then in the head.

So, it's hard to say who has done this....in the polarized climate that is southern Mexico (and indeed much of the central valley)anything goes.

While it is not implausible that some anti-leftist elements planted the bombs to justify a crackdown.... if I had to put money on it, I would bet what it was some kind of fringe leftist group trying to bring the violence and chaos we see in Oaxaca to Mexico City and/or a group that is really frustrated that AMLO has lost just about all hopes for the presidency.

That being said, I have no doubt that you will see a serious crackdown in DF and in Oaxaca in the next couple of days. The government has learned that by being patient, they get more violence and chaos.

Exactly the kind of audience/thinking that the current government has in mind in this uninspired paint by number strategy to squash all political and societal dissent.

And on cue Calderon today, in a meeting with-wait for it-a group of business leaders- issues a statement saying that Mexico needs to enter, without hesitation, the 'fight against terrorism', warning that it will be expensive and long and lives will be lost.

Morons everywhere applaud, realising that patience causes violence and chaos.

Meanwhile Calderon takes off to see seor Bush tommorow to get some pointers on the tactics involved in maintaining an occupying army, now that it looks like Mexico has its very own Iraq in the state of Oaxaca.

Had to laugh at this. Shouldn't that read ' The government has learned that by turning a blind eye until something happens that they can't ignore (like the death of an American journalist for instance), they get more violence and chaos.'

Missed that speech. Did it come before or after the Ixtapa grenade blasts...the second such 'expression of disagreement' Wink in three days now?

Pardon me, three such incidents, after the Zona Rosa, DF hotel bomb threat. I guess the right-wing conspiracy has decided to scare the gay community there now too.

We watched the aftermath on the news last night. What's the significance tied to taking out the Scotiabank Inverlat? Weird.

They hit ScotiaBank for the same reason AMLO's folks hit HSBC when they occupied Reforma... blame foreigners for Mexico's problems.

Call me a moron if you like... but just because it is from the left does not justify the violence we have seen in Oaxaca. The city was / has been under seige for 5 months. I imagine Fox hoped to wait them out like he did with the AMLO event. But AMLO's folks weren't destructive and their disruption to the city was minimal (esp. when compared to the effects of the blockades in Oaxaca). It was true protest (not that I agreed with them). I wasnt scared to go into DF while those protests were going on, but I warned ppl I knew to keep away from Oaxaca. It might have started out as protest, but it has since devolved into useless destruction and anarchy.

When I heard about the bombs in DF and read the OP's original statement, I considered the idea of some kind of conspiracy to make APPO and the like look bad/instigate a crackdown by the feds. (At least I can show an ability to consider a point of view other than my initial bias) However, since then, I am pretty much convinced that it and the grenades are the work of some pretty unhinged people with no real agenda other than chaos.

No. It hasn't devolved into anarchy. It has evolved into civil war. You are right to tell your friends to stay away. Tourists have no business in a civil war.

It's not a civil war because only one side has weapons. If it were to be a war the APPO would be masacred. Their 'weapons' are sticks, stones nd fireworks.
.. but just because it is from the left does not justify the violence we have seen in Oaxaca.
There have been 14 deaths in Oaxaca, all either teachers or APPO members killed by right wing paramilitaries. The prescence of the PFP I believe has probaly stopped a massacre from taking place.

THe protests are a result of decades, indeed centuries of injustice in the state of Oaxaca by a brutal governing and ruling class. They are on the streets because it's the only recourse available. When violence erupts in any society it is usually as a result of having all other avenues of social change denied.

The path that Mexico has started down Democracy Lane apears to be littered with topes. The less willing those at the top are to embrace change the bumpier the ride will be.

I suspect that count of 14 is low. A month or more ago APPO were claiming 30 dead, and certainly some of those killed have not been either teachers or APPO but simply innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
