"Spearhead of genocide" are not my words, but those of Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez. Read the following article where he implores his countrymen not to honor the famed explorer (notice I chose not to use discover).

http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/news/story.jsp?floc=FF-CNN-TpStrs&idq=/ff/story/5001%2F20031011%2F2010000008.htm&sc=TpStrs

It seems these days it is politically correct to blame everything that happened after Columbus on Columbus. Of course, others had visited the Americas before him. They either chose to keep it secret, had no idea where they had been, never returned to tell the tale, or just plain had bad PR men. The word got out after 1492 and the rush was on from Europe.

What would have been the course of events had the Europeans not come? Would an Asian invasion have been any gentler? Would they not have brought their armies and diseases too?

In any event, I agree with what I once heard on a radio talk show. The indigenous people of the Americas simply had a bad immigration policy. By the time they realized it, it was too late.

Columbus did enough on his own to merit dishonor.

Do you also think that the native North Americans should bear the blame for the former US policy, whereby rewards were paid for each Indian scalp returned? I blame the, then, Americans.

And then, there are the manicheans who say CHrist himself brought the pest unto the world, or something like this!
