I have been invited to a birthday party. It is for a friend's mother, who is going to be ab out 80 or so years old. So, my question is, what should I bring to the party for the birthday girl? Any input on this one would be great.

Thanks
danielita

Going by what would be a hit with my Mexican family I would say a nice box of chocolates or similar sweet treat.

Second the chocolates. When I went to a birthday party a few months ago with my family, my surrogate mom went out and bought chocolates for me so I could give them as a present.

I'm going to be codo on this one and say that if you've never met the friend's mother, you aren't expected to bring anything. That doesn't mean it would do any damage to bring a small gift, however.

I'm with Guy that I doubt you will be expected to bring anything, but I do think you should. If you can't find nice chocolates (I've been to Ixtepec!) then flowers, or a flowering plant is another option. If it were a man, a bottle of Mescal, but I don't think I'd give that to a women I didn't know.

I think that one would depend on the region. For example, I couldn't imagine giving mescal as a gift to any Yucatecans that I know. Perhaps tequila, vodka, or rum, but not mescal.

Yes, the unfortunate part is, most of the chocolate around these parts tastes pretty much like a brown crayon...I think will be safe and go for flowers.

Thanks everyone!

My significant others family is such avid drinkers I sent her home for the holidays with enough money to buy a case of tequila as my gift.

Ben, I know that in this case Danielita is in the state of Oaxaca, where Mescal is king. My husband and I frequently visit people in other parts of the republica, and we always bring a bottle of Mescal (the nice stuff) with us as a gift. I would never buy a Mescal that is not from Oaxaca Sad but I'm a bit of a snob that way!

So, M@tt, did you find that the granny crowd paid pretty well when you supplemented your income by table dancing? Wink

in fortin i was asked to strip by my 'host mother' of 54 years at a kindergarten teachers' meeting. they offered 1000 pesos but i can't dance and i was living with this lady at the time, so it felt wrong.
oh, also the part about taking all my clothes off.

stripping in DF at bachelorette parties is about 10 times more lucrative than a good english teaching job but you have to deal with claw marks (so i've been told). just FYI if you need a plan B.
