Anyone have info on this place? Students, housing, general living conditions in the town, ease of dealing with the administration, etc...
How long does it take to get the initial entry visa when accepting a job with them? |

Nope, I'm Jubail, other side of the country. The Yanbu guy is Mike Skorulski. I've just emailed him and asked him to reply. |

I interviewed and was made an offer a few years back at Yanbu. I declined for a better offer elsewhere and wasn't sure I wanted to subject my wife to a year or more of only 2 restaurants to eat at in public and limited shopping, freinds (Thais) etc... With that said I could've hacked Yanbu for a year easily, had I been single. Read as, more than other places you need to be strongly independent. You may live in a neighborhood with Western-Muslims and it seemed to me the non-Muslim Westerners were kept to themselves pretty much (again this was a few years back.) I said "Ahslamm malakeum" to a neighbor (during my brief stay) and he looked at me without replying like I was a pure infidel. (that was just one guy) I believe singles get decent apt. living accom. whilst marrieds get a larger than needed villa. There's not a whole lot going on in Yanbu beyond scuba diving and desert trekking (there's a decent mountain range nearby) and of course Jeddah is a hop, skip and jump South. I'd only consider Yanbu if I was a heavy reader/writer, content with being home often or an extreme scuba diver/desert camper.
Good luck,
A |

Oh Scot---
You're just barely back and the kinder gentler you has been taken over already.
I used to be thrilled if my students wrote a sentence that good. Actually, it is OK grammatically -- just a bit clumsy and perhaps a bit too much information. It communicated -- but I was reading in mid afternoon, just after lunch -- is that the difference?
But, as to the advice -- it was good stuff I think. We finally get some good information about Yanbu and you bite the messenger!!

Veiled Sentiments !
Be careful or I will let "manonatrain" out of its cage !
Anyway English teachers should be able to write a grammatical sentence which makes sense.
So there. I will be the nicer gentler me tomorrow. |

Oh no--- not that--- anything but that---
I think the problem on this board is that many of the posters don't proofread - rather like my students come to think of it. But, at least we are not graded here. I tend to give posters the benefit of a little slack if their information is helpful - many days after hours of teaching and/or grading and/or sitting through endless meetings, grammatical sentences escaped me too. But, I try very hard not to embarrass myself on this board because I know you are watching!!

Nicely stated. But, I try not to embarrass myself (not always successfully) because I return later, almost always, to read what I wrote. Unfortunately, even after doing a (somewhat) thorough proofreading, I still end up making mistakes, or find myself not clearly communicating what I meant to say This happens most often I notice if:
1. I'm in a hurry, or
2. If I change something when proofing what I wrote originally. When I make a change, I often & inadvertently make a different error. I hate it when that happens. It really is most irritating.
Also, I notice with the internet & email-type communication, I tend to be less strict & allow others more slack (usually).
My criteria for (internally) evaluating others' writings on a forum, or other internet communication, is similar to my basic standard for evaluating student writings. That is, do I actually understand what they write? Then, the standard goes up from there. (It's not easy to get an A from me, but it is possible). |

Scot, you missed a spelling mistake or two and another obvious grammar mistake in my original post. What kind of a content critic are you? |

Well if I had a life I would not spend hours every day reading stuff on this site !
Be warned ! If you come to Saudi Arabia you may end up spending all your free time looking at Dave's and finding nits to pick ! |
