I think the other thread raising some interesting questions. And people on this board are constantly talking about whether or not TELF is a real job and TEFL teachers are real teachers and all that. We are all working as teachers, in a very diverse settings in the private and public sectors of many different countries. I know in the other thread there was some debate as to the way people were using the word philosophy. So I will define my use of philosophy of education as hold some beliefs about what you consider to be best practices in education, from preschool to post graduate, have you thought about what ideas and values should drive the process of formal education? Do you have a philosophy of education?

If yes, you can share it if you like.
If no, why not? Do you feel like you're just doing a job? or you didn't get "that sort of teacher education" in your TEFL course? Or perhaps you've drunk away those brain cells. Wink

I said "yes." Even though I'll probably come under attack for this...

I teach students in university preparatory program, for those who don't know.

I think my job as a teacher is to help my students learn to be independent learners. In other words, they must learn how to learn, and I see it as my task to wean them off of me or the need for any other teacher to hold their hand.

Of course, how many of them like this philosophy? Probably fewer than I'd care to think about.

Me too!

I made quite a nice teaching portfolio in teachers' college. The first page should be your personal philosophy of education. I wrote one, but it's not good.

In my opinion, there are two types of philosophies of education.

1. Your true one.

2. The one you have to be prepared to B.S. at an interview.

Saint
Do share! I'd love to know how far apart your two philosophies are.

And my next questions, is your philosophy in education in line with that of the institution you work at? (mine is not) and if not, what implications does that bring about?
