partly because it's a proper name, but mostly because of tradition. in the same way that idioms often don't make a huge amount of sense, capitalization varies a little due to custom.
so the best explanation for your students may well be "we just do". |

| I just want to chime in and add that in the Bible, and in many Western Monothestic doctrines, the subject pronoun "His" is usually capitalized when the referent is God/god/'God"/"god." But I guess that wouldn't come up unless you teach in a Christian school, for example. |
