I have heard that it is a very good place for climate, pollution control, culture, etc. I would like to work in this province if possible.

Other questions:

GOOD online resource with map and pertinent info. re: China?

Possible to work in other industry sectors in China and make about $1000.00 Euro monthly? I have a BS degree in a business dicipline.

and sorry if sound a little snide and a little..dare i say it? unhelpful? i just sifted through all thirteen of the OP's other posts... a veritable archive.

i would be a bad person if i castigagted someone for merely asking for directions. but this is essentially what the OP has done, and in an extremely 'blundering' fashion. have you seen some of the forums upon which he has posted nearly the same exact queries?

so much for the information. Wow.......I never realized what policemen exist on the this forum. I for one would not waste my time looking through threads in order to show people what a skilled researcher I am, but would rather use the time more effectively to help somone who may be new to the forum.

In terms of the Steppenwolf response, simple patchworking of threads together cannot reveal any truth about any one person`s life history (or Dave`s ESL Cafe history for that matter). You have no idea what I have been through over the last five months or so.

Instead of making snide accusations while also insulting one`s belief system in the process, why not simply ask the person to explain the need for numerous threads and posts that ask seemingly identical questions as well as why he finds himself in the situation he currently does? Both God and man would agree with this more civilized, loving approach I think.

Let me try a more congenial answer:
I am sure you will like Yunnan's climate; that's what everyone does (considering the alternatives in China!). Pollution? Bad enough even in Kunming, of course - Lake Dian is almost dead. But that's no comparison to the dead rivers of lowland China!

Cultures? In plural? What do you expect? You mean the colourful dresses of non-Han Chinese? You can buy them off these folks! Most of them have forgotten their native language.

Finding a job: forget about your business Bachelor's! It won't be useful here, and you won't be making 10'000 yuan a month; content yourself making half of that as an FT! But be prepared to sign up for at least 6 months!

Still a rewarding life! Website? I don't normally go there; try TravelChinah. It's a state-run site, though but will carry useful enough information!

Steppenwolf, I've been all over Yunnan and I guess I disagree with your characterization that the minorities have "forgotten" their native languages and that their clothes are for show. Certainly in some touristy cities such as Lijiang they are dressing for show and many minorities lost their native languages centuries ago, but if you go trekking where there are no roads you'll find plenty of villages where people speak the language and wear the clothes.

And in some cities south of Yunnan (e.g. Jianshui, Tonghai) you get to see the old, Han China, with men in their blue Mao suits and women performing traditional dramas on the street. A documentary I saw showed several women in Tonghai who still had bound feet--they did it after the ban came into effect. Near Tonghai there is a village, Xinmeng, made up of Mongolians. Kublai Khan left his expeditionary force there in 13something, had intended to come back and get them, but he never came back and the descendants still live there--there is a village of Mongolians in the middle of Yunnan. Yunnan is a great place for exploring, but you've got to take your time.

You might do fine here, as one of the Chinese. Many of them think nothing of wasting other people's time and asking the same question that was asked 5 minutes before while they were listening. After, all, why should they pay for something like English lessons when they can waste a foreigner's time for free?

Does China need more people lke that?

Be careful of jobs in small places in Yunnan -- there aren't too many schools in Yunnan that are legally liscenced to hire foreigners. There are a few in Kunming, one in Lijiang, and now perhaps one in Jiaotong that I'm aware of. I'm not sure if the Dali school will provide residence permits or not -- it often hires from the backpackers that pass through. I also knew people working in Jinghong for several years, although I'm not sure if it was legal or with business visa arrangements.

Also, making 1000 Euro a month as an English teacher is basically unheard of here. Despite what you might read on other threads, you'll be pretty lucky if you can land a job here making half that. Here and there you might find opportunities for jobs paying 6-7000 a month, but you won't find them right off the bat, nor will you find them on the internet. You'll find them through connections after you've been living here for awhile, know some people, and prove that you're here to stay. The thing is, Yunnan is a nice place to live, so nice that lots and lots of people would love to find a job here. If it was that easy to get a high paying job in Yunnan, then there'd be a lot more full-time teachers working here. This is one of the more underdeveloped parts of China as well, and Chinese people don't make terrific salaries here either, although the cost of living is also low. I guess the point is don't move out to Yunnan on a whim expecting to make big money, move out here with a job in hand, or at least a few decent contacts, bring enough cash to survive on if things don't work out, and expect to take a job that might not pay half of what you consider ideal in order to keep you afloat while you get yourself in a position to where you can set yourself apart from the backpackers and the missionaries.

In Yunnan, there are plenty of jobs in Kunming...as well as Dali and Lijiang I imagine. Probably some in Chuxiong. I studied in Yuxi, just south of Kunming, at Yuxi Teacher's College, and there may be teaching positions available there. There were a few Christians there doing their thing. Mengzi, more south of Kunming, also has a teachers college...or a "sizhuan" that had a few foreigners...teachers I believe--that's if you really want to get away from it all...get away from other foreigners that is...none around for miles. I don't know how many other places in Yunnan have the money to afford foreign teachers. Maybe the lonely planet "Southwest China" Yunnan section will give you the major cities and Yunnan and you could do a web search from there.
