Michael,
Very well said. It's a shame more don't recognize the immense value of your words.

Amen to Michael. I'm quitting my job with GE capital and quenching my love of languages. Nothing excites me more than the idea of nomadic living, living in other countries and absorbing languages. |

I agree with Michael that it's important not to let a job rule your life. But while you're at the coal face dealing with the butchering of your mother-tongue, why not go in with guns blazing and clean up your joint! |
Because all it generates is bad blood and stress. Going in guns blazing makes locals lose face. You never want to be in that position unless you've got your escape route already planned.
Going in "guns blazing" will only lead to hating your job and, ultimately, hating your life. Do what you do best in the classroom. Let the other teachers worry about their classrooms. Let the administrators worry about their schools. If you happen to find a sympathetic ear, one that you think may actually hear your message of goodness and light, then plant a few seeds there. Direct confrontation, however, does you nothing. |

I had assumed that he would not identify with the job to the point where the stress got to him and he gave up or got frustrated. I don't think that necessarily means lowering our standards. I assumed it had meant doing the best job we could under the cirumstances and not crusading against things we could not possibly alter. |
You shame me, lupus. You said what I meant in a manner that was far more clear.
When I say "lower your standards" I don't mean "lower your personal standards for professionalism". I mean "lower your expectations of your colleagues and your overlords". |

This philosophy is pretty applicable to life and work anywhere. Thanks for putting it into words for us.
Thirty some odd years in the US workforce (albeit in social services, not the private sector) has brought me to the same conclusions.
That's why I've been spending so much time reading these threads, trying to see what it takes to enjoy, as opposed to endure such a leap out of my comfort zone.
Glad to see that kind of thinking is what makes your life richer there, too |
