I have never applied to HCT. I did apply to IAT last year and they offered me a video interview but between sending in my CV and getting the interview I got fixed up with something else outside the UAE. I would be interested in a February post with HCT or IAT.

Any idea when the teaching starts up in February?

Longton if you meet the HCT requirements then apply there as the package is better than IAT. Second semester starts about Feb 11.

With an MA in TESOL, what is a reasonable offer at HCT for the cost of living. If I go, I want to save money.

Not knowing how much teaching experience you have, I can only guess how much you'd make... but probably around 11,400 dirhams (if you have taught around 8 or more years, less if you have taught for fewer years).

As for saving money, it depends on YOU. What do you do? If you travel for each holiday, you won't save as much money. If you go out drinking every night and spend oodles of money on clothes and going out to Starbucks, you won't save money. If you go out and camp in the desert and hang out at friends' houses and don't travel you can save! It also depends if you have kids or not. Children are expensive in any country.

I am a single woman who when she travels saves up to $1000 (4000 dirhams) a month. I save about $2000 (8000 dirhams) a month if I just stay at home and watch the free Dubai channels. I make about 13,000 dirhams a month.

Where does the money go? That is almost 4000 dollars a month. I would have figured you would save more being single.

When this semester is over I have 6 years of teaching experience.

As a single woman in the Emirates, I saved a minimum of 80% of my salary each month... and still took two good vacations a year. Of course, I like to visit the cheaper countries, not Europe... and I don't drink. But I had a car... dial-up internet... and whatever free TV there was.

Where does my money go? Usually I live on 3000 dirhams, not dollars, a month. I usually save 2000 dollars, but sometimes I save more, depending on what I do that month. The money goes to

1) getting my hair done or having a spa day (maybe twice a month)
2) going out to nice dinners with friends
3) petrol or gas because I drive a lot
4) phone bills
5) my car is older so it needs to go to the garage and when it does, it costs up to 4000 dirhams to fix things (maybe 3 times a year- yes, I should buy a new car but I like my car)
6) movies
7) treats at movies
8) food that I buy to eat every day
9) lunches at uni
10) sending flowers to my friends back in my home country for their birthdays, special events and such
11) electric bills

I think that's it. Also, when I fly, I care more about who I fly with rather than the cost.

That said, I have friends who are in huge debt because they shop, shop, shop for clothes, have maids, go on expensive holidays, eat out more than I do... so I'm happy that I have a nice little nest egg. Many people here don't.

Yes, it's very conspicuous.

I believe the Gulf News had an article stating that the UAE had the most money spent on shopping per capita in the world (don't know the exact phrasing). The UAE was also listed #1 for waste per capita... USA #4 and Canada #7 or 9. That article was in an international newspaper I read during my last holiday trip... didn't save so much money that month. :)

The UAE also has the 2nd largest consumption of water, after the USA. But at least the USA has some water, (Great Lakes contain one third of fresh water in the world, Amazon River has one third, and Lake Baikal in Russia has 20%. That leaves 14% for the rest of the world. 21st century wars will be fought over water, not oil).
