What's the requirements to get a full time univeristy position in the country where you teach? What are the pay and conditions like?

Japan: Usually at least an MA needed.

Average salary: Around US$3500 to US$5000 TAKE HOME

Standard of living on that salary: Very good. |

In my personal experience (i.e.: where I have worked/work- may or may not be typical of entire country )

Netherlands: minimum MA (related), relatively extensive experience, EU member citizenship, and luck. Pay, roughly equivalent to low-end Japan, good standard of living. However, permanent, full-time positions very rare, most work on contract.

Calgary (Canada: Canada's too big for me to generalize from my one experience!): minimum MA in something preferably related, some experience, talent (meaning that student evaluations rank high in determining whether one will get continuing work). Pay: quite decent when working, but permanent full-time also very rare. |

				| In Peru, you could just be a native speaker with a degree and maybe a year experience. But pay would start around 700USD a month, better ones might pay about triple that. |

				| In China, I think you would work about 20 hours a week and make around 500 USD in the north, in the south you could make slightly more. However, they also include housing. |

Korea: Usually at least an MA but a BA with experience teaching in Korea will also sometimes suffice. No telephone interviews. You must be in the country for a personal interview in almost all cases. Your personal appearance and presentation will be considered VERY important factors in the hiring process!

Average Salary: $1,800 to $3,500 USD per month with furnished accomodations included. Taxes about 5-8 percent. Paid vacation from four weeks to six months. Bonus or pension at the end of contract equal to one month's pay.

Standard of Living on that salary: good to very good |
