Average for a backpacker less than 20 ytl an hour. Average for someone with experience and the right bits of paper about 2000-2500 dollars.

I know quite a few people who work at state unis for 1000 dollars a month. A decade ago they were on the same and the envy of us all.(paid in lira and not sure what the economy was going to do) Now they are the lowest paid. But they do get free housing and a very easy teaching load and loads of holidays.
Then again what can you do with a 1000 bucks nowadays, not alot.

Sort of related. I've just been round speaking with the landlord. The contract is up at the end of next month and he won't budge on the increase for the next year.
20%
What rent increase are you paying( I know what the legal limit is but it's cheaper to pay the 20% rather than go through the hassle of blah blah blah.)

dmb and others,
here is my experience with rent -

1) the law says that the rent can only increase in line with inflation. Landlords frequently try to increase by more.

2) if you pay what you think is a reasonable increase into the landlord's account on the (new tarif) due date this is seen in turkish law to be their acceptance of that rate.

3) Every year you have increased, they accepted, therefore it stands.
They can't go back 3 years (for example) and claim they are not getting what their neighbours get 3 years down the line.

4) You can make an enemy of your landlord this way but the law is on your side.

I have a good lawyer in Izmir who has only ever advised me. I'm still on good terms with my landlord (but time is limited - after 10 years). My rent is currently 300ytl a month (2 bedrooms, balcony, good location etc - not luxurious but adequate), a minimum new rental of an equivalent flat in this neighbourhood would probably be 500. I've always increased the rent at least in line with inflation, why should I (or anyone else) pay more?

DON'T PAY THE 20%; DIG YOUR HEALS IN, ONLY THEN CAN INFLATION GO DOWN, THE LAW BE ADHERED TO, and PEOPLE GET WHAT THEY DESERVE (and, as a yabanci, stop thinking "I can afford it" . What about the Turks who live there? They can't and you can help them by setting an example .

Good luck.

300 a month? wow. that might get you a gecekondo in central Ist. I think the housing market is different in Ist. my landlord just won't budge and won't negotiate. I spoke with a (turkish)neighbour earlier and the landlord is treating him the same way. I have lived in 11 houses in Istanbul. Every time I have moved it has been because the landlord was putting the rent up and wouldn't budge.
This time we have decided to stay. Why? Over the year 20% is about 1800 ytl. If we were to move it would cost more and the usual hassles. No point cutting off your nose to spite your face.

What, there are laws in Turkey and they are even on your side? I must keep that in mind since my landlord is the most evil and greedy man in town. He also keeps threatening to kick me out of the flat. Something I actually would not mind at all as long as he just pays me back my deposit.

On a another note ,but related ,I hope all you rent payers claim the amount you pay against your kdv bill ,that way you get some of the cash back . How many of you out of interest actually fill out those kdv claim forms ? Last year I got back 800 ytl from all the tax I paid and I don't even rent .You can claim on food ,medicine ,clothes and even the rent you pay .

It's a pain filling in the forms but worth it.
I was speaking to a lawyer this morning. There is no law stating that landlords can only increase at the rate of inflation. It is a myth.

Dagi, what do you mean he keeps threatening to kick you out? Is he really trying to do it or just being an annoying ass? (my sympathies, after my experiences with him last year...though he never tried to kick me out-- ouch!)

He hasn't taken any legal steps to kick me out but he keeps threatening. Basically he is just one big *beep*, trying to be as annoying as possible.

Don't worry Dagi. He hasn't taken any legal steps because he is in the wrong. It will take him at least 2 years trying to be legal.
