The HCT increment of 6% has never been an ' automatic' increase and was always linked to performance - and that is what the PEP ( Performance Enhancement Program ) is all about. While the majority of staff get the increase I happen to know some who have not, if your supervisor does not tick the box at the end of the year then there is no increase.

I know of only two people in my years at my college who didn't get the increment, and in neither case was it anything to do with "performance".

Shakbut I agree that 'performance' issues had nothing to do with the with holding of increments in the cases I speak of but of management with a grudge and absolute power. I am just suprised that Afra who obviously works in the HCT seems to think that the idea of the 6% being performance based is part of a 'new package', what I think is that maybe now in her college the idea that the increment is not 'automatic" is another way of saying you need to work harder and do more 'extra' stuff or you may not get your raise.

And it seems to me it was 4% when I was with HCT, 1997-2002.

When they first came out with the 3 year contracts, there were NO increments... no new salary until a new contract. That didn't go over well.

I know that the usual '6%' is merit based but where I work it seems to be the norm. What I've heard about the change in package has come from reliable sources in other colleges where colleagues have said that meetings with the VC indicate that merit based increases in salary are on the way, i.e. the 6% will no longer be the norm. This would bring HCT in line with ZU, I believe, but as ever rumours are the life stuff of HCT so we can only wait and see.

I know HCT folks will find out soon, but I love to think about it logically...

The HCT budget is 140,000,000 over spent, as told to me by a friend who works at HCT and who was told by the VC when he came to visit... so WHY would HCT employees get a BETTER package?

What can the VC's "task force" do to make the package "better"?
1) split up the 6% and actually give harder workers more (but who is a harder worker and will the PEP really help with that?)
2) vacation time for people other than upper level (because they usually have to work for part of the summer
3) take away the extra perks for families and spread that money out to all (like they did at AUS a couple of years ago)

I think HCT workers will be a little disappointed when they find out that what the VC thinks is a better package isn't. Did anyone go to the conference? I heard about it and what the VC thought was an amazing conference this year, wasn't. Word to the wise... don't smell the roses until you have cut them and brought them into your house.
