It looks like I will be moving to RAK to teach.

Are there any places where I can take lessons in learning the Arabic language? Any info will be useful. I am a native English speaker, but that is about it for language proficiency - I can do a bit of French and some Ukrainian if that matters....

Thanks.

Ken, Canada

Hi Ken, I work in RAK now. Which seat of learning are you coming to?

There are ample opportunities to learn Arabic and to practice with local people. It's not a must though as most shops and all the restaurants have English speaking staff. Also thanks to the excellent work done by HCT, the telephone, electricity and most other main government services employ bright young grads who speak good English.

Now that is a comment that tells me that we are not completely wasting our time in gulf education. I hope that they also learned about job responsibility and customer service.

A spot of morning cheer among the usual gripefest in the ESL cafe...

Thank you VS,

The work placement program is not without its problems. However, visiting and seeing the students at work in the real world after three years of college is a true pleasure.

As for job responsibility and customer service well, thats up to the individual employer and employee. Ive heard of only one incident where an HCT student was rude to an expat teacher at Etisatat. The student was reprimanded and sent for further training. Saying that, many a female student has been reduced to tears by locals shouting abuse and waving phone bills and cut off warnings in their faces. Hey Ho!
