As far as japanese movies, i've recently watched Nobody Knows
Somebody mentioned Kore-eda before. This is the only one of his I've seen but it was really good, although super sad. |

| Watched "Yamato" recently. It's basically a Japanese "Saving Private Ryan". It seemed like it was a big hit at the theaters last year. It does kind of an interesting job in showing how (but not so much why) young Japanese soldiers and sailors of the time fought so hard even though they knew they'd be slaughtered. I'm not so sure I understood all of it (Not just because it was only in Japanese, but also because the way Japanese people view the world is often so different from what I can understand), but I think it's a decent rent if you haven't got any other titles in mind. |

Along those lines, I rented Aegis lately.
From the previews I was expecting (and looking forward to) a great Japanese style "Red October" deal, but it wasn't really.
Still a good movie, worth checking out. |

| Do check out "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang". It's pretty good. Spike Lee's latest, "The Inside Man" isn't bad, either. |

Why not? Do you find subtitles hard to read? |
Firstly, are that many Japanese movies released here (in this, the Japanese domestic market) with English subtitles? None at the cinema, methinks; and although you sometimes get the odd DVD or two with an English option (e.g. Nakata's 'Chaos/Kaosu'), rental videos almost certainly won't have any (due to the limitations of tape technology). Secondly, you seem to be assuming that I get most of my DVDs from or in English-speaking countries.
I do however catch some Japanese and SE asian movies occassionally, but I then have to make do with whatever original language in conjunction with reading its subtitling too (Chinese is preferable, Japanese understandable for gist at a pinch) to get as much of the meaning as I can (but I still miss a fair bit). |

I have the same problem, even with DVDs, in fact I'd say I've seen more Japanese movies outside of Japan. |

Flags of Our Fathers is worth seeing on the big screen. Even though the battle scenes aren't fun, the intensity of them is brought to life more in a movie theater. There are some theaters in and around Tokyo with great sound systems. Should have great sound for the price of a ticket, right?
If your Japanese is good, also check out the second of the two Eastwood films about Iwo Jima, Letters From Iwo Jima. It's all in Japanese and I don't know if there'll be English subtitles. As you probably know, this film will tell the story of the Iwo Jima battle from the Japanese standpoint. Whether you love war films or you hate 'em, it'll probably still be worth it if you like drama since Japanese films often tend to focus on the human side of things. |
