I'm looking for a speaker of Italian, Hungarian and English living in Budapest. Any of these languages may be the mother tongue. If you can help (either yourself or if you know anyone who is suitable), please contact me on [email protected] as soon as possible. Thank you.

Good luck on that one. I've never met such a person but guess anything is possible especially in Europe where most people(except those from the UK) speak 3 or 4 languages.

How would you ever know this? And, if there are so many, how come you have never met any of them?

*Ahem*

While it is true that there are a number of bilingual and even multilingual Europeans from "the mainland" and a number of monolinguals in the UK, I don't think it's accurate to say that most Europeans know 3 or 4 languages while most Uk residents don't.

There. I was polite, civil, got my point across succinctly, and didn't even hurt myself. Wink

That being said, I have met Europeans who did speak 3 or 4 languages. I've met people in Asia who could claim the same. Nomadder's main point - that such a person could be found in Europe - I'm sure is a safe enough bet, as it goes.

There are certainly lots of people who speak Magyar, Italiano and English. I am not sure this is the right forum to find them though.

And like another poster I am curious. Why ? And why look for one here amongst all these monoglot Anglo-Americans ?

Best bet ? Go to the Italian Cultural Centre in Budapest ! Another possibilty ? Go to the university in Budapest. Find the Faculty of Modern Philology (ie Modern Languages) and look for a Hungarian who is a student of Italian and English. Hey presto !

It's actually for a client of mine (Italian) who is relocating to Budapest and has asked me to help him find someone who would be a useful contact and who could work for him on a part-time basis.

This--or a variation thereof--is good advice.

I believe there are a number of universities in Budapest ("Pest"). Two or three of those (maybe more?) specialize in training people to work in the government foreign service (& intelligence services & business).

Knowing a little bit of the abilities of some of the better Hungarian students & the competitive nature (& rigor) of some of the Hungarian prep. schools for enrance into the uni. system--I wouldn't be at all surprised if you could find an advanced student at one of these intitutions that could do what you're looking for.

Well, it is pretty much true of the majority here... Wink

I would usually have laughed too but it just happened to be the 90th such generalisation of the week when I read it, s'all.

Generalizations can be a problem. But for one more-if I weren't only referring to Europe I would've said that goes for most English speakers as I've said elsewhere due to English sort of ruling the world. But I forget-do you study a second language in school in England? Actually I'd be curious to know what all English speaking countries teach for second languages. Rather than hijack this thread I think I'll go start one on that topic.

Sorry again.

Foot out of mouth now.

Egads-that statement seems rather Bridget Jonesesque. It was on TV last week.
