What's the best beach and area for a cheap hotel in Bali, family vacation, Thanks! I will have three weeks off and I want to take my family to Bali, would like to see lots of cultural things (especially arts and crafts and Balinese dancing in February) and do some low budget shopping.

What I am looking for is something right in the mix, but not too shady. I am not interested in bars or night clubs, just fun kid stuff.

I have been doing my research and so far have come up with "Simpang Hotel" in Kuta. 16 usd per night. Any recommendations for or against it?

I would sure aprecaite any on the ground info for that area.

The 3 Brothers in Legian is a great place for a family. It is a little more expensive, but worth it. Great central pool and really nice bungalows, friendly staff. I think you are better off in Legian than Kuta as it is much quieter. I have taken my family there before, so I understand you. 3 Brothers is almost always full, so you should book ahead.

3 weeks is a fair amount of time and you could feasibly see a lot. Moving awy from the Kuta/Legian/Sanur area, but staying near the beach, I would recommend Padangbai for it's mellow vibes and good seafood. There are three beaches here, each offering quite different experiences (huge waves, snorkelling, monging). Also, a little further up the coast is Candidasa. The beach is no longer around, but this is a great base from which to explore the poorer and less developed side of Bali. You can also head up to see the Bali Aga people.

Lovina in the north is a crap resort, but the kids may enjoy the dolphine spotting and the whole family will certainly enjoy the hot springs, about 7km away. They are wonderful.

Nusa Lembongan just off Sanur (a ropey two hour boat trip) is very laid back and offers good cycling and lots of sunshine.

Hi,
Thanks for the tips. When I lived in Indonesia many years ago I stayed at a place called, Adams Homestay, south of Bandung, it was great, a huge stucco mansion with arched doorways and a balcony shower facing the indian ocean. I liked the mellow atmosphere and almost no tourist. But I think a kid would get pretty bored with it.

Thanks again.
