Hey! Have some respect for the teachers. TESOL teachers are serious and professional. At PSU they were some of the best. YOU should value your students and the education they get.
The utter nuttiness, the nastiness, the crazy person who is in charge of the program for the ladies makes the place a nightmare, and the most awful place. Toxic atmosphere. Now poisoned by another scandal.
Please. The Foundation Year girl could not spell CAT. The boys were worse. To pretend that these kids could go to Oxford to study is idiocy. Most Saudi students cannot handle the basic skills they need for any real university study: check with the U.S. Embassy's Scholarship program.
Shame on you for belittling such a scandal. |

There is some truth what was written above.
Why do you think Saudi students, in general, are weak in their studies (nearly all subjects!). |

Welcome to the New American Century!
It used to be, but now, I do not think so., especially with the rise of China.
If US is the most powerful country on earth, how do you explain that now nearly 5 years in Afghanistan and 3 years in Iraq and they did not succeed in their mission of defeating the world 'terrorism' and in establishing their 'Mikey Mouse Democracy'???
Even worse in Iraq, the "Most Powerful" US has spent $156.9 billion so far
(again, of the money it doesn't have) to only concentrate its forces in the Green Zone (now renamed as the International Zone), a heavily guarded corner of central Baghdad that is commonly referred to as the Ultimate Gated Community with numerous armed checkpoints, coils of razor wire, chain link fences, and surrounded by T-Walls (reinforced and blast-proof concrete slabs).
The "Most Powerful" US troops now enter many Iraqi cities in fleeting night-time raids once every few weeks emulating the legendary Ali Baba and Forty Thieves of Baghdad.
Delusions about one's power and wealth are fatal. Let's not reinforce them.
This proves that US is getting weaker and weaker, and it will come the day where this civilization will be part of a history.
Don't you agree with me?
There is little doubt anywhere on this planet that America is the most powerful government to have ever existed in history. . . So, how does
America rank in other areas, other than raw military power, with the rest of the world?
Here are some facts about 'the most powerful and wealthiest contry' on earth:
Land Of The Free?
More of us are in prison, per capita, than in any other country.
Also more prisoners than any other country, in raw numbers.
Poverty?
Of the 19 first world nations, ours has the highest percentage of children
living in poverty. America pays the lowest minimum wage rate of all the
first world nations.
Support Of A More Peaceful World?
The U.S. is the largest arms supplier/seller to the world. America sells
more weapons, of all types, guns, bullets, bombs, chemical, biological,
landmines, than the next nine (9!) arms-selling-governments combined.
Free press?
According to the latest report by "Reporters Without Borders", the
U. S. currently ranks 17th in our "free-press", i.e. 16 countries rank
above the American press in having a freeer press than US ..
Health Care?
America is the only first-world nation without universal health coverage.
Currently over 40-million Americans have no health coverage at all.
Of the rest, the large majority have sub-standard-co-pay coverage.
The percentage of US children without any coverage has risen to 67.1%.
Etc, etc, etc, ..
I do think we need to redefine the terms "Wealthiest" and "Most Powerful."
BTW.

This all true. Anyone who thinks this is unimportant disrespects TESOL teachers and the profession. The teachers at PSU were some of the best professionals I ever knew. But the nuttiness, the nastiness, the vicious, really, mismanagement makes the place toxic. Poisonous atmosphere. The cuckoo who runs the ladies program has non-native speakers running things, insults everything American (as if there were better), insults some fine teachers and okays quizzes and exams that are plain wrong. There is considerable wind about linguistics but a deadening setup for the investigative and expressive skills he kids need.
The hemorrhaging of women teachers is another sickening scandal.
To pretend that PSU students, who cant spell CAT, can handle real university work is to discredit TESOL. Shame on PSU and Oxford, shame on anyone who accepts this as a cultural aberration. Please value our work. |

Agree!.
Maryfrance, if you are satisfied and convinced that you are doing a professional work, then ignore the people who do not value your work. This shows that they are not professional. |

Globalnomad,
I don't think anyone here is denying that the elite US universities are among the best in the world, or that the US is still at the forefront of many scientific fields (though many claim it is losing ground fast). My point - which I still stand by - is that the general world knowledge of the 'average', non-university educated American, is very poor. It is poor not only in contrast with that of non-uni educated people in other first world regions like Europe, but also in contrast with developing regions like the Gulf.

I have spent my entire working life in the ME and Europe. I have never taken a 3-hour lunch break or had the sort of short working days you describe. It would be nice though. |
