backpacker hostels keeping records of guests

Why do you backpacker hostels and guesthouses keep a record of guests' passport numbers and issue/expiry dates?

I have no specific reason for asking, I'm just curious what these businesses do with my personal information after I check out?

I think it is for safety if something like SARS breaks out then there are ways to conatct you, it might be the law even? I have always wondered too.

I wonder this myself. It's not just backpacker guesthouses either. I've had it happen to me at very exclusive luxury hotels and resorts. Sometimes I wonder if they ever copy the information and claim a lost or stolen passport. I've heard of this happening. This would be a nightmare! It's scary.

Because the police and government require the hotels and guest houses to keep records information on guests.

Yes, but exactly what information is required versus what is a bona fide invasion of privacy?

In Asia, identity theft and fraud against foreigners are becoming big business. If a hotel asks me for information that is personally sensitive, I reply, "Why do you need such information?" Nine times out of 10, they say, "no problem, we really don't need that information."
