I'm thinking of taking the Sensushei course. It's the one-year crash aikido course for future instructors portrayed in Angry White Pajamas. I've several years of TESL experience and I figure I'll find a job teaching in the afternoon. It will be very tough but I can do it.
My future wife is Korean. Can she find a job in Tokyo? She speaks English and has a business degree. I read the biggest foreign community in Japan is Korean and concentrated in Shinjuku. Thanks for your help.

What kind of visa will you be coming over on? Where's the aikido course - in Shikoku?

I reckon I'll come on a work holiday visa since that's what the Yoshinkan aikido Honbu recommends. I can make it just before my 31st b-day. The Honbu is near Ochiai subway station in Shinjuku. What can you tell me about that area in terms of work and finding a place to live?

The course is in Tokyo.

To the OP: The course may allow you to get a Cultural Visa for yourself, although I believe they only run for six months (they are renewable). Your wife could probably get work in Japan - maybe even a working holiday visa - but the problems she will face are related to the fact that she is not a native speaker of English (if she is looking for employment as an English teacher).

What type of employment is she looking for? How is her Japanese? A lot more details are necessary if you are seeking any definitive answers. Otherwise no one here can tell you for certain what she is qualified to do and how difficult it will be for her to gain employment.

As for the course, it is actually spelt "Senshusei". I can't help wondering how Robert Mustard et al feel about Robert Twigger's book. They may not be too happy with his portrayal of some of the people involved. For that reason I would keep your opinions of the book to yourself until you figure out what your instructors think of it - or you may end up doing extra bunny hops!!

If you could post some more information on your situation we could provide more information. Good luck with the course!

She unfortunately doesn't really speak Japanese to any noteworthy extent. Maybe I could encourage her to learn it. And to tell you the truth neither of us has any particular job in mind for her. I just know there's a fairly large Korean community in Japan and hopefully with her English, business degree and work exp in accounting she oculd find a job. Few Koreans get Japanese work visas, so it's better not to count on it.
Thanks for your help!

There is a large Korean community in Japan but I think you may be mistaking the nature of this community. They are largely what is known as "zainichi" Nihonjin. They are Korean by extraction but they are to almost all purposes Japanese. Many if not most of them don't speak Korean at all and they are the descendents of Koreans who were brought or emigrated to this country during the time in which Korea was a colony of Japan.

They may carry "gaijin" cards which perpetuates their status of being foreign but for most of them Korea is a country that they would feel as alientated in as Koreans who come to Japan would. If your wife was looking to work in a "Korea town" in Japan she may find that her lack of Japanese would make her something of an outsider.

I hope this doesn't sound too negative, I am just trying to point out the reality of the situation. There are probably other posters who know more about the availablity of work for Korean nationals in Japan and I hope they can provide some information that is useful for you, but again, good luck with your plans.

What kind of visa will your future wife be on ?

My girlfriend is Korean and I am having to pay a huge amount of money per month to send her to college merely so she can stay in Japan on a student visa.

Sadly, that is the only way she can stay in Japan (that I am aware of)

Yes, the visa for her wouldn't be a problem if you're married and you can show that you can support her. If you're only engaged, that makes things a lot more problematic.

She might be about to teach in a Korean school (some of them are after hours schools for kids who want to improve their Korean, these same kids go to regular Japanese school during the day), but she would be a lot better off if she knows some Japanese.

Give me a PM when you come to Japan. The Ochiai station area is just around the corner from me. I'll buy you a beer (or a coffee if you prefer) and show you around a bit.

Just to reiterate what others have said - if you're married before you get here, it'll make things a whole lot easier as she could then remain in Japan as long as you yourself have a visa. If not, she has to get a visa herself independently.

There is quite a demand at the moment in Japan for people who can teach Korean, although given that it's generally complete beginners who are interested in learning Korean, decent Japanese language ability is needed. If she can get a foot in the door some other way, that might be useful later on once she's picked up a bit of Japanese. And, believe me, Koreans can pick up Japanese much faster than us English speakers!

I would suggest it's worth trying to see if an organisation called MINDAN can help you. This is the Korean (southern affiliated) residents association in Japan. They exist primarily to help ethnic Koreans in Japan, however I know of a couple of Koreans (from Korea, NOT ethnic Koreans in Japan) who got the jobs here that they now have via some kind of help from the local MINDAN office. They may at least be able to give you some useful suggestions.

They have a website at mindan.org/eng
