Try a CELTA in Shanghai. Not cheap but much better than just a TEFL which, to be honest, means very little as there are no standards regarding them anymore. You can get a TEFL by doing nothing but a CELTA at least means you had the money to pay for it!!  |

Boland in Suzhou has an excellent program. I completed their TEFL cert in Decmber 2005, and have been teaching in Chongqing for the last year.
I think you do the TEFL cert mostly for yourself. If you have a bachelor's degree, you can definitely get a job in China without it, but if you have never taught ESL etc before, you will find the course extremely helpful. And doing the TEFL course in China is a great opportunity to "practice" living here.
Check out Boland, they take themselves seriously, and run a good program. |
