Weekly walks / swims / paddles on the beaches in Muscat - it rained last night and the air is positively delicious with freshness. Sitting at the beach bar at Al Bustan, sipping overpriced lager, a quick swim for a snorkle at the many varieties of fish and occasional turtle just off the beach, rinse - repeat or an evening beverage at the Crowne Plaze outdoor bar which overlooks the main beach and rest of the city as the sun sets and the foam settles......ah, the winter is a treat !

Muscat -
=Qurum Beach for a swim and a stroll on Friday mornings followed by a walk across the street to Starbucks and a coffee while looking through the palms at the sea
=The Chedi for fresh oysters and champagne
=Muttrah Souk for a visit to the bakhoor guy all the way in the back with a hundred choices of scents
=Al Fair in MQ for a big succulent pork roast
=The Crowne Plaza for dinner at Shiraz started by imported Iranian caviar
=Kargeen for mint lemonade (notice the food slant here?)
=The Seeb airport for plane spotting: Jaguar fighters, C-130s, C-117s, Short 330s - cool stuff!
and
=Jebel Shams for landscapes from another planet, as well as trees full of goats
The list could be never-ending. What a wonderful place.
=The sea, at the proper time, full of luminous plankton that make stars in the water all around you as you swim at night
=Shuwa at Eid, making as well as consuming
and to conclude this list:
=roasted goat brains and cow lungs. Mmmm!
Shocked

Yes ... yes ... we've all got access to beautiful landscapes ... but as far as I know we all have two day weekends and five day working weeks ...

Some of the main survival tactics are actually in evidence ... keeping a tight lip, your head down, and a check on your sense of humour ...

I do wish others would add to the Sheikh's list. As he knows I only lasted a couple of years in the desert then had to make a hasty retreat to Cadde I-kebir in Istanbul. Give me the noise, pollution and hassle of a mega-oplis. How do you guys survive in the desert for decades? One can only read and go to the gym so much.
