Hey,

I've been studying japanese fgor a while ot better prepare myself when I finally do get to Japan (just applied to JET^^). I just past the 500 kanji mark and started this 2 book set that will teach me another 500 but my goal is to learn 2000 so I was wondering if anyone knew of any books that would take me to my goal. If it would help the books i've been using taught the same 1006 Kanji that is taught in japanese school system. Which was confirmed by the constant (I REMEMBER THIS!!) exclaimed by my japanese friends every 3rd page when they looked at my books.

any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Read my signature for help reading kanji. Read the rest because you're obviously a newbie. Furthermore, a simple search wouldn't hurt either.

Damn dude, a bit harsh? Mr. St. Pierre there in your avatar certainly wouldn't approve of such a response. Wink

Anyway, the Kanji webpage in Canuck's signature is excellent. Another one is www.thejapanesepage.com. Although its received mixed reviews I REALLY got a lot out of "Remembering the Kanji".

Congrats on knowing so many before even getting on the plane!

You need to know around 2000 kanji to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test at Level 1. Is that your goal? If it is, you might be able to order a copy (in book form) of last year's test somewhere in your home country. If you can't pick one up there, you can here at a Kinokuniya or Maruzen book store.

Ah thanks everyone!
um, canuck sorry if I broke any rules. I try not to break forums rules but it's hard sometimes. I'm a mod on another forum so I understand your response perfectly. Smile

The books i've been using so far are the basic and intermediate kanji series by bonjinsha. I love their method because you don't just learn kanji but they have a TON of exercises. So much so that I hated it for a while but then when I started at my hagwon (yep studying japanese in korea^^) I could look at a kanji and immediately know all the readings and sometimes the kanji with the opposite meaning. So apprently those annoying exercises work!
Again thanks for all the websites. I'm going to use every resource I can!
