My friend's mother recently retired and she is very interested in teaching English somewhere in Asia. The problem is that she doesn't have a degree. I know that Korea and Japan both require a degree in order to get a working visa to teach, are there any countries that don't require a degree to get a visa?

(she's obviously not interested in working illegally, so please nothing about "come as a tourist and work privately!")

If it helps, she's from Canada.

In Japan you need a degree OR 3 years of teaching experience to get a work visa.

Yeah, she has neither of those. Too bad really. She does have experience working with kids, but not as a teacher (ESL or otherwise).

She probably wouldn't like Cambodia much.

Working Holiday Visa in Japan for a year. Use the search function for the Japan forum if you would like more information. Search Working Holiday Visa or WHV and you'll come up with lots of information.

Canuck, what's your avatar? It looks scary. I hope that isn't the short cut home after a few beers down the pub.

I can't think of a funny joke to add about it. It is what it is. Laughing

Thanks canuck, but the WHV for Japan appears to be only for people under 30. She's my friend's recently retired Mom so, although I don't know her actual age, I'm gonna guess it's over 30 Wink

Are there any other visa options for people in her situation (over 30 with no degree)?
