back to the rent topic-- I am in court about two houses. My current landlord wants to kick me out over 120TL. My contract says the rent goes up at the rate of inflation, and that is quite a common term on a housing contract, so perhaps that is where the myth came from. Last year he wanted to raise the rent 30% and his daughter threatened court, so i went to court first (I am very experienced in court here if you ever need any advice, having been visiting the adliye for more than 4 years). The court set the rate at 14% and I set up an account through the court for paying my rent. It p-ssed him off, off course. He wanted me to pay part of something that was his responsbility and that ticked him off too. So, back to court. The judges (all women by the way) see that it is stupid, and we have won one case already. We go back on Christmas Day (which IS on a Monday, dmb). Court stuff takes forever. There's a hearing, which results in another one, and on and on. So if you ever are taken to court or think about going to court, be aware of the time, not to mention the hassle. If you want to stay (as I do-- I have a great place and it is only 550TL), then it is worth the delays. If you don't want to stay, start looking around.

Getting back to the op ,salaries are better at the private unis or kolegis but as has already being covered its more of a crowd control exercise than actual teaching .Most people are know are on 2500 + and teach less than 20hrs a week ,some are on less than 10 or if you are a tdu joe about 5, YES,,,, 5 hours a week, in the class ,now work out the hourly rate for that !

I wish I'd read about this a month ago. As newbie I'm on 800 USD per month, no housing allowance, for 30 hrs a week though they are doing my work permit and give medical insurance. Feel ripped off, though. Funny thing is, my DoS has made a point of coming into my classes and saying to the students that since the earthquake of '99, there are very few native English teachers in Turkey, therefore my classes are very very lucky to have me. Lucky, lucky them. Oh well, can renegotiate my contract in a year, till then will just have to find some private students...

Perhaps you know:... To the best of my knowledge if you're under a work permit of one school, it's illegal for you to join another (unless they voluntarily release you from your contract) - and it's something the state do do something about, unlike working on tourist visas. I wonder if that's why they're gong through all the untold hassle of making you legal?

Just a thought...
