Yes folks,once again the Yuletide season approaches only this time its a little bit different ,coz we got the Monday off,Yippieee. So a long weekend is in the offing ,will you take advantage of that and travel ?Maybe staying at home and having a get together with friends and family with a Turkey dinner plus all the trimmings .Whatever you choose,spare a thought for those who are on their own at this time of year ,now that is depressing .More than a few newcomers are on their own this year for one reason or another ,where can they go for a bit of festive spirit ?Turkey is not very Christmas minded ,its usually difficult and expensive to get into a bash of one sort or another ,does anyone know of any happening in Izmir ,coz I heard that the British Consulate cancelled their do ,any alternatives available ?

I'll be working that day. My place doesn't take kindly to holidays especially foreign days. Shocked

This may come as a surprise to you ,that day off is yours by LAW,the Turkish education ministry give it to all foreigners teachers or otherwise, you have no business at all working on that day if it means anything to you at all .

Is that really true, Ollie? I was just planning to give myself that day off in any case, but I'm not sure what my school will do if all the foreigners decide to do the same... They'll be down about 20 teachers! Not my problem, but still...

Really? I had no idea. We don't get Thanksgiving off either. Interesting. We do have all the Turk holidays of course. But in the 3 years I have been where I am now, no Christmas holiday. It means something to me. It was my childhood and my family day of celebration.

What other things is my place of employment keeping from me??

By the way, do you have good insurance where you are at? My insurance is worthless.

If they keep basic ,but fundamental stuff like that from you ,then I shudder to think what you may be ignorant of because of their less than competant management .BTW I recently learnt that the easter holiday is also given to those who apply for it on religious grounds .Always remember ,if you don't ask ,you won't get,or in plain English ,there's nowt for the dumb .

That's what I keep teling my husband but he's not having any of it, though he does like the presents.

I think he's still bitter after that childhood realization that Baba Noel didn't come to his house becaue he was Muslim...

I had friend who worked in the Jewish school in Etiler... Confused

Since he was Irish he claimed all of the christian hoildays...
Since the school was for Jews, it was closed for all of the their hoildays...
Since the school was in Istanbul he got off all the Islamic and national days...

At one point he was only going to work for about 3-4 days a week. Rolling Eyes
