What's the latest news from Oaxaca? Has the trouble died down a bit yet? Is it, or will it soon, get back to normal?

I can't really say right now. Friday, December 1st will likely be a key day. Things will probably be clearer after then.

I agree with MELEE ( are you shocked M?)

With AMLO's "inauguration getting a good turnout, it stand to reason that we need to watch and see what happens both in DF and Oaxaca on that day.

Things had gotten a lot quieter here, but then the rowdiness picked back up again on Nov. 20. Word right now is that something is going to happen tomorrow, with APPO maybe trying to reconstruct roadblocks around the city and retake the zocalo. This is purely conjecture, gleaned from talking to people out and about, and (attempting) to read the newspaper. But we shall see. I'm fully prepared to wait it out with a good book, a beer, and some lesson planning.

For those who speak Spanish here's a report by Oaxaca's most well known artist, Francisco Toledo on the current state of affairs...

On Wed. Dec. 6th, after 125 days of occupation, the APPO turned over the Huajuapan city hall to the major and his cabinate in a ceremony that was broadcast on our only local media, the radio. Most national and state wide media repeately reported that the conflict was confined to Oaxaca City. I sent several emails pointing out that that and other things they reported were simply not true, but never got any response from the media Laughing .
Any way, after shaking hands with our PAN mayor, the local APPO members, who are from the MULTI (Movimiento de Unificacion Triqui Independiente) and FINC (Frente Nacional Indigena y Campesino), didn't just pick up their things (they'd been camping under the arcos) They started scrubbing down the building, and brought out buckets of paint to cover the grafiti!
What do you make of that?
Just polite country people? or was that part of some behind the scenes neogitation we didn't hear about? The official statement was they have to get back the their village for the Lupe-Reyes season. Shocked

Looking at some of the initial causes of the conflict, as Delacosta has been so diligent in providing, maybe all the back channel corruption of where the money goes and who gets it has solved the issue there where you are Melee. PRI fed money to PRI state players to disburse to local militias, union chiefs, and rabble rousers is the old way. Maybe it's now PAN fed money to local militias, union chiefs, and rabble rousers, going right around PRI state. I'm guessing, but I think any guessing on Oaxaca has to start with the money flow.

Maybe the best way to get rid of Ruiz isn't through legal means at all. Maybe just cutting the rotten Oaxaca tree at the roots is the solution.

Yes, it did come out recently that our current Mayor, the fourth PAN mayor we've had in a row, is a friend of Calderon's. He's planning on personally asking him for a connection to the Superhighway, something that would change the face of the city forever and shave about two hours off the trip to Mexico City.

Ruiz has admited that some of those arrested and transfered to the prison in Nayarit are innocent. This the same weekend that Pinochet finally dies. Confused
