I am in San Jose, returning to the country this past summer. One of the inconveniences was the cost of phone calls to the States. While there are many fine programs that allow computer to computer calling free, I have many people who do not live at their computer stations, so I am searching for inexpensive calling to the States.
This summer there were two options: ICE at international rates as expensive as the States, or telephone booths at Internet cafes which are cheap, but inconvenient.
I have Vonage, which theoretically allows me to bring my phone adapter here, use it and treats all calls to the States as part of the monthly fee. I did not bring it. I posted earlier concerning Skype, so I am using it now.
However, I would like to know if anyone is using Vonage here. Their fine print says that while it theoretically can be used in other countries, it depends upon whether or not that country allows it.
Your input would be helpful.

I am currently living in Honduras, and everyone has vonage here. They all have US numbers, and therefore, it is very easy to find a very cheap internet cafe (which of course has a vonage number) or to get your own. I dont have one, but use a friends vonage phone all the time.
Costa Rica has a very crazy phone monopoly. Once coming here, I wondered if anyone had it in Costa Rica. Im not sure if people did have vonage phones, and I wasnt aware of it, but I wouldnt be suprised if the country doesnt allow it. From Honduras, I can text message to the US and receive messages from the US. But Costa Rica, with their funny system, doesnt except messages from either the US or Honduras.
Its worth checking out, but CR might not allow. Honduras does though. |

We have Vonage at the house I rent a room in, in San Jose. From what I know, it's illegal here, but as long as you have an adapter and high speed internet, it's possible. |
