wow, papua is angry....
...just get a fake one..... apparently they seem to work quite well( as mentioned by a previous poster)
.....ps, don't bother trying to use it to apply where gugel works..he will find out. |

Gosh this is funny.
So would people like to guess at roughly what percentage of the teachers in Indo have a degree, or even a TEFL? |

| And don't even worry about it where java-gila works - a grasp of the good book and dexterity with a rosary count for far more over there than academic qualifications. |

| Oh and as for Happy me, I think I saw a post of his the other day that right out of the blue was written in fluent, near faultless English. Made we wonder for a second that perhaps he is a native speaker after all. Perhaps he is just a bit of an alcoholic and is off his face most of the time he writes. |

i don't really want, or mean, to slag the happy one but the claims are obscure to say the least. he said before that he used to be a teacher but the pay wasn't enough so now he was an editor......AN EDITOR!?!?!?!....i personally would pay a kings' ransom in gold to lay my hands on anything published that he edited........
......then he turns up on the singapore forum as a representative of the department( or ministry, i'm too lazy to check what the proper name is) of education for singapore...releasing some sort of "official statement" regarding some warning/ scam.
...he does seem like he might be drunk alot but i think he is a local english teacher who uses this forum to practice his english...i just wish he would relax on the "stories" and false fronts... |

It is funny. When I came in 1997 with a fresh TESL certificate and talked about it, I got a lot of strange looks. Most of the people I met then who were teaching are still here. I just made a list of 30 people I know well enough, and I'm pretty sure about their qualifications. It seems to me that the longer people have been here, the less likely they are to have either a degree or TEFL.
19/30 have nothing, many of them not even high school. They'll never go back to their home countries. These are mostly long-timers.
9/30 only have a degree in something, not necessarily related to education or English.
2/30 including myself have a degree and a TEFL/TESL certificate.
This sampling of course reflects the kind of people I include as friends/acquaintances, and that I spend an inordinate amount of time on Jalan Jaksa. I also work in a place (for now) that doesn't necessarily require a degree or certificate.
You can work out the percentages yourselves. |

I've already received emails from people kind enough to share some advice, most of which didn't have degrees, or were working towards attaining one via online courses. And no, not all of them were EF. Three of them had families.
When I originally posted, I thought a Bachelors degree, in ANYTHING, was the *minimum* requirement. Perhaps that was the case years ago, and perhaps it wasn't. But to suggest it is now is something I find difficult to believe. For better, more respectable jobs, I'm *sure* it is. But for a job.....yes, even working for 'peanuts' at EF.....a degree does not seem to be a requirement. |

This thread is mildly entertaining, however it lacks any substance whatsoever and in no way assists teachers or so called teachers who may be interested in useful issues at hand!
Assaults on members of this forum serve only to further inflate the posters own over inflated head; in most cases the poster lacks any proven knowledge of other members and only has a vague belief of what he/she perceives as truth.
Ones clam�s or other stated matter is of little concern to anyone, one would be better served by understanding and/or extracting useful information from posts rather than looking for ways to discredit the participant.
I personally hold the belief that living/working within Indonesia would be a more fulfilling experience if we worked toward bettering each others lives rather than using our time to slander and hurt others; as Teachers we should be supporting not only our students but also fellow Teachers, a Teacher not only works to perfect their skills, but to assist others in bettering their life.
