I see that many jobs require a photo. I am sure attractiveness helps, but what would potential employers in Asia like to see?
Blond hair or brown?
California tan?
Short hair or long?

What do employers hire for?

Blonde hair, blue eyes, no fatties or dark skinned people.

Sadly, Bayden has it right. Add short hair, careful grooming, friendly smile - and you are half the way there.

Then . . . add a smile, a suit and tie - and you have overcome most of the photo prejudices.

Not very, unfortunately.

And, mostly the short hair and a suit thing applies to men. Women get away with more, but really short hair not an advantage.

best,

Justin

I would suggest dressing according to what you are looking for. Are you looking to teach kindies? Then be who you are. Be fun and creative. If you are looking to teach adults or university then be professional.

Hope that helps a bit.

Or you could use the method that most Koreans use! You could just touch up your picture so much that it no longer looks like you. tedkamara, do you remember seeing Korean ID cards when you were there? Do they look anything like the real person? You could even make your hair blond using the computer so that you have the perfect Californian look!!!!

Should baldies wear a wig?

Unfortunately, the race and age cards are major players here. Ironically, Chinese who are born in English speaking countries are often the most discriminated against in China! Parents pay for white English speakers: applicants from The Phillipines and India are also given short shrift, though the ongoing shortage of teachers means more are getting offers.

So all you blue eyed, young, slender blondes out there, think of your brothers and sisters before sending that photo.

Absolutely not! Nor should we sport a comb over.

Here in Ecuador, baldness is fairly uncommon, so it's hard to find someone who can give you a good haircut. At first sight, they all do the same thing- sides short, top long, comb and spray to cover bald patch.

When I tell them that this is not what I want, and that I'd just like a nice, easy to care for, short-all-over kind of haircut, they all stare at me like I'm crazy, and say "but that will make you look BALD." And they're right. I am bald.

Best,
Justin

I knew of someone in Korea who put in blue contacts and dyed his hair blonde before getting a photo taken. Skin whitener helps as well. I was considered borderline at best. Think Barbie.

Koreans use PhotoShop to change things. Have a friend who knocked ten years off her age with it. Maybe 20!

I have thought about turning my white hair blond and ironing out those wrinkles. Then I could get a kindy job. But then again . . .

But what would happen when your new employer met the white-haired, wrinkled real you?
