On the first day of Christmas, the Emirates gave to me, a tax free paycheck monthly.
Don't know about like2answer, but I think I work for my tax-free paycheque, it certainly isn't a gift.
But let's get back to the Reasons to be Cheerful. Umm, a decent local annual TEFL conference - registration fees are a bit steep but nevertheless still more or less affordable on a tertiary sector salary.
Maybe we don't all feel as if we live in a multicultural society but there's usually cultural diversity in the staffroom here, and that's mostly good.
The big plus at Christmas is that it's too far to go to your in-laws on Christmas day.... |

| With just 12 posting days till Christmas we're doing modestly well on here. One or two misdirected posts which should have gone on the "bah humbug" board, but an extra present from Santa for l2a for the imaginative style of answer. |

Howling gales. Beating rain. Flooded streets. Mist and fog. And this is the UAE!
We can get weather that makes you think you're back home for December - this year they even managed mud for the rugby 7s! Except it's not really cold and the inclemency only lasts a day or two, then back to the sunshine.
What else? Karama and misc other shops everywhere to stock up on stocking fillers.
On the teaching side, every student intake seems slightly more knowledgable than the previous one. They are less naive, more frank, willing to discuss a greater range of subjects. Before anyone contradicts I am talking university sector here, I know the schools and maybe HCT are different.
Reasons not to be cheerful - having to teach on Christmas Day and at the same time still not knowing what time we'll get off for Eid al Adha.... |

Howling gales. Beating rain. Flooded streets. Mist and fog - oh my! Are you going to see the wizard?
As for the holidays, you will get the 29th of Dec to 6th of Jan off. They don't bus students in for one day.
Isn't it nice once the howling gales, beating rain, and mist and fog all dissipate... and the flooded streets dry... to see the sun peep it's rays through the clouds and have such a nice, beautiful country to live in?
Merry Christmas and Eid Mubarak. |
