Hi There,
Right now I am doing some grass roots work in the Philippines where I think I can be of most use.
Looking back on these emails convinces me that I made the right decision. I'm sure that you are all nice people if I met you but honestly I don't know how you can talk about me with such candor because none of you has ever met me and I don't have any personal experience with any of you. I never even met the teachers who complain about me. They were hired by a program director that was in charge of their project and although they were pretty terrible they were still allowed to finish their teaching semester.
I agree that one should have a good idea about where s/he is going before s/he takes a job there. That is always the challenge of overseas work. However, in the end it will always end up being a matter of how well one can work with one's employer and adapt to local customs.
As for leaving McGill, it was not I who abandonned them; they closed the international office and terminated everybody's contract (including mine). I would have been happy to stay and work on this program.
In the end, I find myself working in this corner of the world doing what I can to make a difference. That, I think, is all we can ever hope for; to do the best with the time we have. I always welcome any emails from anyone anytime. But honestly, I think I have had enough telling me what an idiot I am.
Sincerely,
Paul |

I applaud your decision as well as your work here in Taiwan. Leaving the McGill issue unaddressed is not going to win you a lot of friends on this side of the Pacific.
Pamamaalam,
A.

I'm not sure two disgruntled teachers is really an "issue". Those two teachers (out of the hundreds who went to China) were upset. But I guess the "squeaky wheels get the oil".
There is a famous story about "Stonewall Jackson", while running for office, called an aid into his office and said: "I would like to start a rumour that my opponent has sex with pigs". The aid replied, "There was no way that anyone will believe that!" Jackson replied: "I know; but if we work really hard maybe we can get him to deny it!"
The message is that "speaking" is halfway towards truth even if there is no truth in it. In the end, people will believe what they want but I suspect it will have little to do with the truth. |

I just spoke with someone last night who taught at a national university here in Taipei. He told me that he and another new teacher waited 9 weeks for their first pay check after getting hired |
