I'm planning on teaching in Taiwan for the next year or so and am just looking for some general tips. I'll be living in either Hualien or Tainan, am still deciding and I figure I'll just go and check out both cities before I make any concrete decisions.
Which brings me to my point. I'll be travelling alone and was just wondering what kind of safety concerns I should be aware of before going.
Also, I know the Chinese New Year is on Feb 18th this year. Does this mean that the new semester starts in March? or late Feb?
Any advice would be helpful. |

The new semester begins Feb 26th. Note that Feb 28th is a public holiday. I'm not sure when is the best time to arrive for a new job search here. Because you want to check out Tainan and Hualien before coming to any final decision I would suggest arriving at least two weeks earlier, say before Feb 12th. This will give you a good week for interviewing with schools before Chinese New Year when everything will shut down, everyone will go on holiday, and a good job search will be difficult to manage. |

You can find a job here at any time during the year.
There are some times that are better, according to
some people, but if you come prepared, you can find
a job at any time. It may not be your ideal job, but
there is no perfect time for that. Show up and you can
find a job. |
