Hi, I wanted to know how hard it is to get a teaching job in Cameroon. I currently live and work in China but my boyfriend has been relocated back to Cameroon.
Any information would be much appreciated. Thank you

The Brutish Council offers teaching posts in Cameroon every two or three months.

They might be expanding at an alarming rate.

Either that or check your bush meat closely...

I worked in Douala for a year, but in the French school. Met up with the BC crew when I was there. BC douala doesn't seem to have any problems recruiting, as Douala night life rocks. Yaounde, the capital, about 250 kms away, finds it more difficult to hire, maybe because it's more boring. Douala is the economic capital, which means it's relatively easy to find work there if you're ready to venture out of the domains of competence you're familiar with. Africa in general is a land of opportunity, but probably not the one you planned on before you came.

This said, my cousin who was living in Douala with two young children left the country because she felt it was getting too unsafe. There is an alarming rise in petty violence and thuggery as the economis situation is becoming more difficult. A very good friend of mine has been living there for donkey's years, has a brand new wife and baby and no plans for leaving, so it's up to you really what you want to do.

Generally speaking, East Africa is much safer than West Africa (with the notable exception of Sudan and Somalia and Nairobbery, Kenya), but a lot more boring! West Africa's got the music, the food, the night-life, the high-life!

Hope you enjoy

Well, I am not looking for a Cameroon job anymore but I am going for a 2-weeks visit. Will be mainly in Douala. Any tips from anyone - good places to see? To eat? I will be staying there with my boyfriend who is Cameroonian and I am sure I will be taken to expat places (he was an expat in China and we met here) but I just want to know an opinion of those who visited/were/are expats in Cameroon.

Thank you.

Just an update: I made it just fine to Douala. Visited Kribi. Loved the place. Going again in summer. If anyone needs some information - let me know. I can't tell you much about schools and teaching positions but if you need tips on how to get around - will be glad to help Cool
