At this moment in time for the life of me after trawling through numerous lists of artists and group names that are currently the vogue I am hard pressed to think of 5 let alone 10,the same goes for films and videos , maybe I should stay home more and watch mtv !
Maybe music these days is so mediocre ,I don't know ,very little of it excites me .
Your lack of response thus far would suggest I'm not the only one . |

Wow! Thats a first! Nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks that the music today has lost its sparkle .Maybe the demise of TOTP has something to do with it .Just kidding . |

There is a lot of excellent music out there these days, this year even. You just have to look. It won't be spoon fed to you by the media, and it probably isn't signed to major labels. I don't have time just now to compile a list as thorugh as our Baba has, but i want to add a few others that were lovely this year- Tom Waits put out a new (well, 3 new) Cd, and there was lovely stuff from Cat Power and Jose Gonzales and Alejancro Escovedo, M. Ward, Regina Spektor (oops- mentioned- just noted), The Decemberists... etc ad naseum.
Stop being such knicker twiters. |

How about a top 10 weirdest stories of the year courtesy of GQ?
Quote: |
GET A WEST-LIFE:
This festive season, we look back on the craziest, weirdest and most unbelievable stories of 2006. First up, Mike Tyson admitted in May that he wanted to be a member of Westlife because the Irish boy band's music always makes him "melt". The former boxing champion was so keen, he asked a close friend to contact the band's manager, Louis Walsh, to "set the wheels in motion". Despite his bad boy reputation, a spokesman for Westlife didn't rule out the collaboration: "This sounds really interesting - the band are all fans of Tyson." We've not heard anything yet, but watch this space.

A SORDID AFFAIR:
Though Osama bin Laden continued to elude the American secret service this year, his former sex slave was all-too-willing to speak out. Kola Boof previously worked as the terror leader's mistress in Morocco in 1996 but is now a scriptwriter, based in America. She plans to create a new character for top American soap, Days Of Our Lives, based on the al-Qaeda leader. "This character wants to take over the world," she said.

SEXY LADY:
The weirdest allegations of 2006 came from Christopher Anderson's Barbra: The Way She Is. The biography alleged that Barbra Streisand had bedded a string of A-listers, including Prince Charles, Dodi Fayed, Liam Neeson, Warren Beatty, Steve McQueen and Richard Gere. Anderson went on to claim that Hillary Clinton banned Streisand from the White House after learning that she stayed overnight while the First Lady was in Arkansas at her father's deathbed. Definitely this year's most likely libel case.

PALMED OFF:
This year's award for bizarre injury sustained has to go to aging rocker Keith Richards. The Rolling Stone managed to fall from a palm tree in Fiji and was discharged by doctors after being treated for concussion. After a week of headaches, Richards was back in hospital, where he had brain surgery to avoid one part of his brain crushing the other. The guitarist made a full recovery and on being discharged (yet again) thanked "the beautiful ladies who make painful nights less painful and shorter" and quipped: "I hope I wasn't too much of a pain in the arse - after all, it was my head that was fixed."

SWEET SUCCESS?:
The local elections weren't the most exciting ever but one story certainly livened them up. The Liberal Democrats admitted using sweets to tempt children to hand out election leaflets. In their Guide To Fighting And Winning Local Elections, sent to party officials, they recommended that campaigners "go into the middle of a council estate with your leaflets and shout at all the local kids you can see and hear: 'Any of you lot want to help deliver these leaflets?' Then proceed Pied Piper-like round the estate doling out badges and toffees and leaflets, the last at least to be pushed through doors by the shouting, squealing and quarrelsome horde." The party's chief executive insisted that all political parties used such techniques, but we're not convinced!

NOT VERY FIRST LADY-LIKE:
It was handbags at dawn at the White House this summer as Laura Bush accused her predecessor Hillary Clinton of bad taste and poor housekeeping. In An Intimate Portrait Of The First Lady, Mrs Bush disclosed that she was appalled by the state of the West Wing carpets and furniture, many of which were frayed, and added that the furniture in the East Wing, the official quarters of the First Lady, looked dated. She was also taken aback by the Clintons' garish use of colour, which included red, blue and gold.

THREE'S MORE FUN:
The Internet became more influential than ever this year, a fact that one American girl ignored to her peril. Her boyfriend, known only as Dan, wanted to prove to his girlfriend Kim that anyone can capture the world's attention online, so he bet her that his site would attract two million hits through "email word of mouth". If he won the bet then she would have to find another female to participate in a mnage trois; if he lost, Dan would have to concede to Kim that he was an idiot. Needless to say, the power of the web, along with promotion in several national newspapers, left Kim looking for a partner.

GIVING IT SOME BALLS:
The World Cup had everyone hooked this summer, but it's a football match of a different kind that's made our top ten. When the England Legends took on Germany in a charity match at Reading, Paul Gascoigne, Graeme Le Saux and Lee Sharpe did us proud, while Boris Johnson exhibited one of the most memorable tackles the game has ever seem. The excitement had obviously got to the Tory MP, who admitted beforehand: "I'm like a greased panther, a coiled spring, all that suppressed kinetic energy. My metatarsals are OK and I'm looking forward to the game."

A CHEEKY CHAPPIE:
One of the most surprising couplings of this year was between Liberal Democrat MP Lempit Opik and Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia. Opik, who had previously been engaged to weather girl Sian Lloyd, took Gabriela to London's Science Museum for their first date. The Transylvanian singer hit back at remarks made by Lloyd, saying: "Our relationship is really genuine and it's not out of a pantomime or anything like that." Whether genuine or not, Lembit was criticised by some quarters for intervening in his girlfriend's deportation case, after Gabriela was denied further leave to stay in Britain. Can this relationship last long-distance? We'll find out in 2007.

EIGHT-JAGS PETE:
Pete Doherty seemed to get arrested for drug offences on an almost daily basis during 2006, but our favourite Pete story involved his other passion - cars. When his Jaguar was towed away because he didn't pay the fine, the Babyshambles frontman couldn't be bothered getting it back; instead he went to an East London dealer and bought another one for 1,000. This wouldn't be so surprising, had it not been that this was Doherty's eighth Jaguar in two months. Defending himself later in an interview, the musician said: "Drugs are what I enjoy, just like I enjoy buying old Jaguars." |

You need a hug.
Actually, I put the top 10 up to try and let you know about a few records that you might all find interesting. Rather than complaining about music today, try checking out a few names that you haven't heard of.
DMB - I highly recommend Spank Rock, I do you a CD if you want.
Ollie, I agree MTV is dross. Yaramaz - The Decemberists and Cat Power were both in the Top 20 |
