Just registered and thought I would chime in and say Hi!. What a great forum with lots of dedicated teachers. Thanks for all the great info!

I am currently a licensed Occupational Therapist practicing OT in California. I would love to go back to Taiwan to live for a few years or so (I was born in Taiwan but grew up in Southern California). Practicing OT in Taiwan requires that I pass a written test in Chinese, which I will not be able to do because I can't read or write Chinese. I am somewhat fluent in Taiwanese and less with Mandarin. I've thought about teaching/private tutoring, but most (or all) English schools prefer non-Chinese teachers, right?....what options do I have? Thanks!

Do you have a university degree/and or Taiwan/dual citizenship? I'm unaware of what training an OT needs in the states. If so teaching English is still an option. The reality is you may be paid less (this depends on the bushiban owner's point of view more than anything else so shop around) than the non-Chinese teachers.

I worked with a guy with dual Taiwanese/U.S. citizenship who was being paid the same as the other foreign teachers at the school and I've met a British born Chinese who was paid the same as the other foreign teachers in a public school.

However I've also met a half American half Taiwanese guy who took jobs at the same pay rates as the local teachers due to his physical appearance. This guy could have done better if he'd looked around for a better job.

As this is a site that focuses on English teaching and you're considering other employment options in Taiwan you might be better off posting your question on www.forumosa.com

Thanks for the lead. Yes, I have a BA degree in OT from an accredited university in California. I also have dual citizenship... I guess I'll just go visit some bushiban's the next time I go back.
