the mmc. I was hoping to go there this summer. I will be returning to japan after a three year hiatus. Please answer a couple of questions,

How long is the probationary period and how low is the salary for this time?
I can only teach about three months there before starting grad school again. Will me quitting, forego any of my salary (I know the company delays the first check, how about the other's)?
Last question: how easy is it to make friends at the center? I like to go out but remember not much going on in osaka for non-speakers during the week days. Does Tokyo offer more night life for non-speakers during the weekday? By how much?

Thanks

This is rich. Laughing You will quit at around the same time you get off probation (it's 3 months). With all bonuses and allowances, I remember the probation salary being about 250,000 a month. After probation, it went up to about 280,000.

Payday is on the 15th for the previous month. Depending on when you come in, you could be looking at your first paycheck coming in 6 weeks after you arrive in Japan. I don't remember how the last paycheck is handled for persons not in Japan. I believe there are some forms to fill out, and Nova either mails you a check or does a wire transfer.

lots of good info on the thread, but had some questions.

What are the chance of getting late and early shifts around the weekend? What employees (eg, tag levels) does one have to avoid to avoid scrutiny?

Can one meet or date the j-staff, CS and LS? How far is the apartment from the center? Is it affordable to take a cab after the evening shift?
THanks

Prlester,

If you start on May 1st, your first paycheck will be on June 15th.

I'm not sure what the salaries are, but I've heard most new instructors are on a 34-lesson contract. 280,000 Yen after probabtion might be a little much, unless you have all late shifts.

When my friend worked for Nova in Osaka, at first he was living in a Nova apartment, and said it was close to the center of town. But, another friend who transferred to Osaka was living out near Kansai International Airport.

Regarding your final wages, you have a few options.

If you're last day is July 31st, you'll be paid for that month on August 15th. If you'll already be out of Japan, you can have the money sent via wire transfer, but it takes a month, and costs 10,000 Yen, I think. Nova deducts those fees from the check.

One option is to open a bank account with Shinsei Bank, and ask that your final wages are deposited as normal (still August 15th), and then you can withdraw the funds once you're back in your country. Shinsei gives you an international ATM card, is very foreigner friendly, and generally easy to deal with. You can do a search for them, and find out more. Their website is - http://www.shinseibank.com/english/

Another option is after your last day to send an e-mail to foreign personal requesting all final wages be paid within 7 days in accordance to Article 23 of the Japanese Labour Standards Laws - http://www.jil.go.jp/english/laborinfo/library/documents/llj_law1-rev.pdf -
This option is good too because you might still be in Japan a week after you finish, and you can close your bank account, rather than leaving it behind, however, with Shinsei Bank, you might be able to close your account by fax.

I'm sure you'll meet the staff, and you can date them. It happens a lot.

Anyway, you'll have a good time.

Good luck.
