| I am an American who has always been interested about living in Japan and I want to find out more information on jobs my husband can do down the line other then teaching. I want to find out more information about police jobs in Japan and not much has been showing up in this website or any other. Lets just say he knows good conversational Japanese and has training here in America. |

Other than some sort of cooperative internship with a police department back home, there's just no way this could happen even if he grew up in Japan, was as fluent in Japanese as a native speaker, and had Japanese relatives. Sorry. |

Erm...are you really surprised that not much information about becoming a cop has shown up on an EFL website?
There are jobs available working with the police. This includes teaching English and in some cases liaison work but I imagine that they are quite difficult to get.
As for working as a cop - forget it! You would need to be a Japanese national and the process for becoming Japanese would be ludicrously impractical for you if you don't have the intention of staying here for the rest of your life. Even if you did become Japanese your chances of being accepted as a cop are as good as zero. |

About a year and a half ago I saw a bunch of Bosozoku pushing and punching some in Nagahama. What did the cops do? They asked the gang to be nice and "please" go away. Then the cops left, not asking for back-up to help round up the kids. They were, on occasion, PUNCHING the cops. End result? The cops went away.
Why would anyone want to be a cop in Japan? They are laughed at and treated with no respect. People consider them to be a joke, useless, and pathetic. At least in the US people fear and/or respect police. Not in Japan.
PS: I heard that if a cop fires his gun its pretty much his fault for not finding a better way to deal with the situation. I can't say if that's true or not, however. |

| I worked in law enforcement for five years in the US, and even though Japan might be overall safer, I wouldn't want to be a cop here. |

I'd say the general population respects them pretty mych fine. Ex-pats don't tend too, but IMO in most instances that's simple bigotry. After all, "country cop-Japan" is going to be a much safer bet for competence, reliability, honesty, and dedication than "country cop-USA"! If you think all Japanese police are useless and a pushover then I suggest you find the nearest Metropolitan Riot Police team and ask one of them to kick you around for a few minutes and see how you go. ;) |
