Um, iyi bayramlar, mutlu yillar... Not exactly Christmas given the islamic nature of the country (mutlu noeller?) but at least both Eid and new year fit into the festive time slot this year! |

This PC happy 'holidays' crap really annoys me to tell the truth.
Face it, it's CHRISTMAS!
Merry CHRISTMAS.
or as they say around these parts, Melly Chlistmas. |

Dear Bayden: I am not talking just Christmas, but New Year's too. It's a time period, the Olde Winter Holidays, if you prefer. Good wishes for the two often come packaged together, I think. So, happy holidays (in the plural) to you too!! |

Actually, it's not just Christmas and New Year's, either. It's Hannuka (spelling, anyone?) and Kwanza, and, well, what else? Hajj, also?
This is an international forum by nature. So, it's clearly not just Christmas.
And, while it's not directly job-related, the recent discussion on learning languages as well as teaching them would seem to indicate that most teachers on this forum feel that there's some relationship between the two. So, it's a reflection of us and our jobs -
how many languages can we wish happy holidays (whichever ones you celebrate) in?
Good going so far! |

^ You asked for it สุขสันต์ วันคริสต์มาส
Although Buddhists don't generally go crazy at Christmas,
the above translates into 'sook san wan khrit maat'
or 'Happiness & Bliss on the Day of Christmas'
Since we're heading down the socio-linguistic path,
it's interesting to note that Thais have major problems
pronouncing the letter 's' - especially as a final consonant;
that's how we end up with 'khrit maat' - instead of Christmas.
Happy New Year is สวัสดี ปี ใหม่, pronounced 'Sawatdee pee mai'
Any questions? Quiz on Friday.
