Funnily enough, this very issue (with tomatoes) caused a HUGE debate/disagreement between a former colleague and me. He said vegetable, because it was used in salads; I said fruit, because of its seeds. My Czech students also said 'vegetable,' the dictionary said 'fruit.' Hmmm, who's right? In the end, I had to accept that dictionaries do not contain objective truth and that people can define things themselves... (within reason, of course).

Dear denise,
Another world heard from - tomatoes are actually berries. Yup, that's right:BERRIES - believe it or not.
" The tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) is a true botanical fruit. Because the entire fruit wall or pericarp is fleshy, it is technically called a berry. "

|
|
Yes, it is a generalization. Basically, when people say 'West' in the "West" they mean USA, Canada, NZ, Australia and then countries of N. Western Europe. It is not really correct. But that is how it just came to be. Latin America should be part of the West, but somehow it is just not portrayed that way.
East is another generalization. So are so many continents. I remember when I went to school there were only six continents. Now, there seem to be 10- Europe, N. America ( where blond people live), Central America, S. America ( where mesizo Spanish-speaking people live) , Asia ( where people with slanty eyes live), Middle East ( where darker, long-nosed Muslim people live), Russia ( where ex-communists live) Africa ( where Black people live) and Australia- where people that look like Americans live.
In the eyes of Saudis the West is even not so big a generalization as it is in the eyes of the East Asians to whom even Turks and Russians are " Westerners" and are probably from America.
When a Saudi sees a tall blondish man walking down the street he calls him a "Kawaja"- a Westerner. End of the story.
Sure, many "Western" values are Anglo- Saxons but Anglo- Saxons are generally who are most present in all these non-Western countries. There are not so many Greeks, Albanians or even Italian people in Saudi. Or anywhere else.
Maybe other non-Anglos should travel more to dispell such myths. |
