Just wondering what everyone's New Year's plans are this year. I just found out my mother-in-law has offered to babysit tonight (NY Eve) and now we are trying to decide what to do tonight. My wife may go into labour (her due date is Jan 1) which of course would throw all plans out the window. Anyone know if Japan awards prizes for having the first baby of the year?

From the lack of responses, seems everyone had a great NY Eve.

Wow, Gordon I am v envious that you have a babysitter for tonight. How is your wife doing? Any sign of labour?

Yesterday we went to the local Buddhist "church" (as it is called here) with our mochi rice and had it steamed, pounded and shaped into mochi. We all helped with the pounding including my 3-year old. They will fill with bean paste or peanut butter or whatever you like. It is great with a small chunk of brownie inside! Some people put peanut butter and jelly inside.

Now we are at home and as is the local custom here, we are setting off fireworks in our backyard.

All the best and Happy New Years!

I cycled aimlessly around town for a few hours.

Went to karaoke alone for an hour.

Then went to a little darts bar and stayed there with 5 other people I'd never met playing darts until 4am.

Still waiting.... We went out last night and virtually everything was closed.

Wow, never had PB mochi. Last year we pounded mochi at a friends' place, lots of fun. Almost broke someone's hand, missed it by a hair. Laughing
Maybe that is why we weren't invited this year.

I went to Meji Jingu in Tokyo along with many many thousands of other people. Aside from my feet getting quite cold while waiting with the rest of the herd, it was quite fun. I ended up walking home and stopping at two more shrines on the way. I finally made it home at about 3:30am. My girlfriend and I went to another shrine near my home today. Got some great pictures and am quite sure I'll have quadruply good fortune this year.

Oh mate! That sounds really sad Crying or Very sad I hope you ended up having a good time anyway!

Gordon: I had a good time but I couldn't have recommended a place that night with anyone who was expecting. It would have been supremely irresponsible. Anyway, good luck with your new one and if it happens to be a particularly irrascible chap I would be hounoured if you call him furiousmilksheikali! Wink

I stayed in and went to sleep early. How sad for my young age!!! Sad

But my husband and I watched movies and ate loads of junk food. It was quiet out here by Muira beach, we heard a few firecrackers go off at midnight but that was it.

Happy New Year to all!!!

Gordon--did the wife have the little one yet????? Very Happy
