I'm in the mood to buy some new CD's, so let's hear some suggestions! What were your favorite releases this year? I usually listen to African music, but I'm also into some mellow electronica stuff (like Royksopp), and some jazzy hip-hop (like Common).

These aren't all 2006 releases but well worth checking out, considering your tastes. Do me a favour though...please convince at least one person in Japan from listening to something horid like Kumi Koda or Smap...kidding.

I don't know anything about African music but coincidentally I was watching "Broken Flowers" by Jim Jarmusch the other day and it featured an interesting soundtrack by Ethio-jazz musician Mulato Astatke. The rest of the soundtrack was pretty good too. Unfortunately the film and soundtrack came out in 2005 and most of the tracks were recorded long before that so it probably doesn't count. Check it out anyway though!

The Knife - Silent Shout (all of The Knife's albums are incredible imo)

Also, Spank Rock - YoYoYoYo

PF is a good place to start, but some of their reviewers try too hard to be critical and throw out really low scores. I'd put Darkel on the top 50, but the PF reviewer ripped it apart, hence it wasn't on their list...total BS imo. Listen to it a few times, then read the review.

I don't buy CD's, I borrow and download like crazy. My tastes run the gamut to say the least. Depends on my mood.

New stuff: 9th Wonder, Jay-Z, Nas, and Mos Def all had decent stuff coming out recently. This is it for new stuff for me.

Latest loves of mine and the rest:

Fela Kuti Ransome - Water No Get Enemy

Suzanne Vega - Caramel

John Mayor - Belief (really like this one)

9th Wonder - take your pick, lots of good stuff

Dave Brubeck Quartet - Take Five (always lifts my mood)

Jay-Z's newest album

Keisha Cole and Diddy - Last Night

I loves me some old rap/hip hop, thinking Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Common, Tribe Called Quest, and a ton of stuff I can't think of right now. Too lazy to check my iPod.

Ray LaMontagne, Pete Yorn, Old 97's and John Mayor get my picks for music to mellow out to currently.

I love hearing other people's picks on music! Gives me ideas and new things to check out. Hope some of my picks are enjoyable to others out there! Very Happy

In 5 easy steps:

1. Obtain killer car audio system or home system

2. Obtain:

................... i) Ministry of Sound Maximum Bass CD set
................... ii) Fast & Furious III Tokyo Drift movie soundtrack

3. Insert CD into player and press PLAY.

4. Crank bass to obscenely high volume. (If a neighbor comes to complain that a flower vase just got knocked off his shelf, you've just about got it right)...

5. Sit back, and enjoy.

My 2 top releases of 2006 (bearing in mind that I'm out of touch with people my own age) would be -

Prince: 3121 - a solid release with some awesome songs. His best effort in a while.

Elton John: The Captain & The Kid - yes, yes, say what you will but if you're up for a good ol' fashioned album then Elton and Bernie excelled themselves with this follow-up to Captain Fantastic & The Browndirt Cowboy. Few hits but a solid album.

Thanks for the recommendations! Sorry I haven't replied, but I've been sick as a dog for the last week (I've been to the hospital THREE TIMES, all because the first doctor I went to prescribed the wrong medicine, which actually made me sicker). Anyway...

Mr. Ali, I LOVE Ethiopian music! If you like the songs on the Broken Flowers soundtrack, I recommend Volume 4 of the Ethiopiques series on Buda Musique. It has all the songs from the soundtrack, plus more. I have five CD's from the Ethiopiques series, and they're all good (but volume one is my favorite).

Whoever recommended the Knife, I've heard a lot about them from a friend of mine in New York, and she's supposed to send me a mix CD of their stuff. It's fun, happy Euro-trash dance music, right?

A coupla people mentioned Pitchfork, but do ya trust 'em? Sometimes I feel like they are just trying too hard to be cool. I'd rather hear personal opinions from real people on this board who spent their own time or money getting their music, I just think they'll be more honest.

And am I the last person in the world who still buys CD's? Jesus, just doing this much typing has made me tired again, I can't wait 'til I feel genki again...
