let's say, hypothetically, that i were to have epilepsy. i understand that the insurance you get into doesn't cover any illness/sickness type thing that you have before you go. i can handle that. i will probably get brain surgery before leaving. but let's say i were to have a seizure while working, would they pretty much send me packing the very next day?
thanks. |

i've known epileptics who've worked for nova, but i don't know if they've actually had fits in class. to be honest, a lot with nova depends on how nice/nasty your assistant area manager is, but i suspect you wouldn't be on the first plane home if it happened once. could be more of a problem if it happened regularly. |

Guess who would be paying for that plane ticket home. It wouldn't be Nova. |

No! Yamanote senbei, you should know that under Japanese law NOVA have to give employees thirty days notice if they terminate someone's contract. Even if they don't let you back into the teaching booth they are still required to pay you for a month.
Also, they won't send you out of the country because they have no right to do so. Only immigration has the powers of deportation.
I think it is worth looking into a little further but the idea that someone can be sacked for having epilepsy sounds highly discriminatory and potentially illegal.
I would also look into getting some kind of insurance that does cover you in the event you had an accident at work or in Japan resulting from your condition.
Are you going to be working in a branch or the MM centre? |

I didn't say that they would be deported. Nova's JMA insurance would not cover any of the expenses, so the person would most likely return home at their own cost to receive treatment. Nova would get as far away from them or suggest that the person get as far away from them as possible.
There was a similar tale told in an issue of Japanzine published last year of a Nova teacher who was diagnosed with cancer and left the country for treatment, but the story seems to be mysteriously offline now. I've quoted from it before.
This wasn't what I was getting at but just to clarify things, an employer can terminate an employee at any time, with no notice necessary. It happens all the time. It is illegal of course, but unless the employee knows their rights and are willing to fight for them, the law might as well not exist. |

epilepsy is not cancer. it is unlikely that there would be any treatment costs involved.
in my experience, nova can be quite accomodating to employees with medical conditions. |
