And in any case, though I've never said "love your enemy" on this forum, is loving your enemy a "hippy" virtue? Was the guy who is usually credited with saying this a hippy? Would he agree with the values of so called hippies today?

Would he agree with the action of those who claim to be his followers today? I think he'd be more on the side of the "hippies" than his most vocal adherts today.
I consider myself a member of an organzation that "convenants to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person" It is one of the hardest things I do. It's not easy and it often seems to contradict human nature. When you look at someone like Pinochet, it's hard to see the worth. Maybe his role in the world was to bring out the best in those who fought against him. To provide the opportunity for many to "do the right thing"?
Justin? Ryan? others? any insight? |

Noble, Melee. I really do think noble is the word. But I can't turn the other cheek, despite my own Catholic upbringing.
The best in those who fought against Pinochet, for me, pales against the best never found in those whose lives were ended by a violent silence. |

Sorry MELEE. No answer.
I've just advocated sympathy for a family that has lost a member, but I can't see any worth in his life. Probably would have been better off aborted.
ee cummings, when he served as a soldier, wrote about his willingness to kill the enemy, but not to hate them. Maybe that's the best I can do by way of explaining my odd point of view on this.
Best,
