hey guys,

It turns out that I can probably get my work extension after 9 months of fighting for it but they are asking for proof that I have paid into the Rentenversicherung system. The lowest amount appears to be 78euro a month and the highest is 19.5% of my income!!! That could therefore range between 4000 and 13000 euro! oh shit! now what?

If I were to get married would this be "forgotten" about for awhile longer?

It sounds like a lot of money now, but paying towards the German Rentenversicherung will also make you eligible for the German state pension once you retire.
If they require that I doubt they will forget about it in case you get married.

I can totally understand you!!! That seems to be frustrating.

However: I know from a friend who came from South Africa to work in Germany for 2 years. After half a year he was fed up paying into the "Rentenversicherung". He got the information from a tax accountant "Steuerberater" to write a letter to the "Finanzamt" and state that Germany is not your first country to stay for a lifetime. You have to mention that you will return to your home country in some time (give ann exact date, if possible) and therefore Germany is not the place where you will retire nor are you asking them to put you onto their pension plan - so you won't get any money from them.

My friend was successful and with the money they returned to him he was able to pay the downpayment of his nice villa in Pretoria/S.A.
