I am on Kokumin Kenko Hoken now but am about to qualify for Shakai Hoken . I have a wife who earns 10,000 a month and a newborn child.

I am confused. Should I take it??

What do you mean when you say you are "about to qualify" for shakai hoken? Are you going to change jobs (or job situations)?

Your wife earns 10,000 what -- US dollars, Japanese yen, British pounds? What is her current insurance status?

If you are considered a full-time employee, your employer must enroll you in Employee Health Insurance through Shakai Hoken. It should be automatic and you shouldn't have a choice in the matter. If your current contract is written so that you're actually considered part-time, but your employer is asking you to approve a change in your contract that will allow you to attain full-time status, then you actually have a dilemma. Your payment through Shakai Hoken will probably be around ¥30000 per month.

Here's a link to the Social Insurance (Shakai Hoken) website:
