I'm finishing a year in Fukuoka (soon returning to Tokyo for family reasons). I think Fukuoka is a great city.
Once you get outside of the downtown area, Fukuoka is beautiful. Lots of seaside parks, beaches, rivers, mountains and palm trees right in the city. I can see the ocean from my apartment window, and jog by the beach. I only ride the train when I have to, preferring to ride my bicycle everywhere. I noticed that people here often have outdoor hobbies, like windsurfing, sailing, fishing, hiking, etc. Plenty of outdoor options.
I was expecting Fukuoka to be much warmer than Tokyo, but it's about the same.
If you love the madness of Tokyo and Tokyo's nightlife, Fukuoka will seem boring. I'm enjoying living in a quiet, seaside neighborhood, with downtown only 15 minutes away by subway. Apartments are much cheaper here, but salaries are lower. |
